We are a team of three: Joshua (a local student and entrepreneur from Mathare), Katie (an urban planning consultant for UN-Habitat originally from the U.S.) and Kareem (a community organizer and human rights activist from Canada). For months have been leading international visitors on tours of Mathare. We show them the youth center, the local restaurants and shops, the community garden we work on…

What we’ll do

1. The tour starts at the Mathare Roots Society (a youth resource center along Juja road). This is the main meeting point. We will introduce ourselves and give a brief history of the settlement. 2. The Mathare Valley is very busy, full of people, animals, and interesting sites. You can reach the Mathare Roots Society by taxi, matatu, or motorbike taxi (boda boda).

Where you'll be

Mathare Valley is a informal settlement just 6 km north of the Nairobi City Center. Its a bustling environment full of interesting sights, smells, and people to meet. The community center starting point is a hotspot for community events and the tour will continue to show special sites which are providing important resources for youth development. The Mathare river and the community garden have great views and show what life is like for locals.
