What you'll do

Take a peak behind the scenes at the only thatched micro-brewery in England. Located in rural mid-Devon with stunning views out towards Dartmoor, this brewery tour combines a love of traditional English ales with a celebration of England's spectacular historic environment.

You'll get to see the historic 17th Century farm buildings, built from cob and stone and Grade II* listed with Historic England, and the medieval well head where our unique spring water bubbles up from deep underground. Then we'll head into the brewery where I will show you how traditional English ales are made, the equipment used and the key ingredients. Finally, we'll move into the tap room where you'll get to taste the end product.

Message me if you would like to arrange a tour for any day not listed - I'm pretty flexible!

I am the founder of Taw Valley Brewery, the UK's only fully thatched microbrewery. We're relative newcomers to Devon, having packed in sensible jobs in London a few years ago to have a go at doing something different. I built the brewery from scratch in a listed, 17th Century former threshing barn on our farmstead. I now brew over 1,000 pints each week from the spring water that bubbles up underneath an ancient well head. I have a passion for traditional English real ale and old historic buildings which I love to share.

Where you'll be

Situated in the timeless rural countryside of mid-Devon, hidden a few miles north of the wilds of Dartmoor. Westacott Barton is a 21 acre farmstead dating back to the 1400s. We have woodland, meadows and amazing views out over the Den Brook valley towards the moor. All our buildings are made from cob (mud!) and covered in thatch. And we have the brewery!

Marc and Family's Taw Valley Brewery is a Great example of a micro entreprise. For them it seemed like a Labour of Love - for the amount of effort they put in for the relatively small return. They are in a Great location, Brilliant property with heaps of character and history. They have put in great effort to maintain the English Heritage. They probably have one of the most unique of resources that goes into their Beer - water from a natural spring which apparently dates back to the Roman era. I must admit, we didnt taste the different variety of beer as we are not into alcohol. So Im not qualified to comment on the product itself. But from what Marc very patiently described is the process that goes into making the beer NOT expediting artificially (unlike mass produced) the various intermediate steps Im sure the end product is much better than a mass produced brands. He was kind to offer us non-alcoholic drinks at the end. We did buy a dozen bottles which we hope to share with our friends.

A likable character whose skill & enthusiasm for brewing is only matched by the entertaining narrative and awesome Grade 2* listed cob barns - We started a week long stay on Dartmoor with a tour coming away with some delicious beer that we enjoyed for the remainder of the week.

We loved our tour of the brewery and the story behind the site. Marc gave us an in depth tour of the processes in both thatching and brewing and we learned so much about both. The highlight was possibly the beer tasting and guessing which brews we were tasting. Marc told us a lot of fascinating information - we asked a lot of questions and he was really informative. Couldn’t really recommend enough for a day out!
