What you'll do

This walking tour for photographers takes you through the byways of Arashiyama, well off the tourist trail. We'll skip the infamous bamboo grove by Tenryuji, I can show you another where hardly anyone passes so you can get that iconic shot, along with a temple with hundreds of whimsical moss-covered statues, a fine moss garden, and good spots for shooting autumn scenery. All throughout our walk I'll be giving you photography tips and instruction and pointing out good vantage spots, and please feel free to ask any questions you have about photography.

I'll be available from March 23 to April 8 this Spring 2019. Non-photographers are also welcome!

Please note, this tour is mainly for those who want to take pictures. If you would like us to take pictures of you, please book our Gion Walk with Personal Photographer experience (https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/324488)
Other things to note
Ideally, bring a camera that has manual settings and interchangeable lenses. If you have a circular polarizer please bring it, it will be very useful for shooting the autumn leaves. Leave your tripod.

Hi! I'm Dariel, my wife Cathy and I are both freelance photographers and writers who've fallen head over heels for Kyoto. There's nothing we enjoy more than walking around this lovely old city's back streets in the early mornings or late afternoons, camera in hand, and it's even more fun when we do it with friends. I used to teach photography at a university and in workshops, and my wife and I used to write for a photography magazine as well as other publications. https://www.dcqphotography.com/

Please note, I often work in areas where there's no internet, so please allow me 24 hours to reply

Where you'll be

Ideally we should meet at 8:00 a.m., or we can meet at 6:00 if you really want to shoot the Tenryuji Bamboo Grove first. We then proceed to Otagi Nembutsuji Temple, and from there we'll be following the Saga Toriimoto down through the back streets of Arashiyama, visiting a selection of off-track temples. We'll end the walk at a restaurant in Arashiyama where we can review your photos.
