What you'll do
We will meet for coffee and vetkoek where Sifiso will give a short background talk. The walk continues through Brixton, an innercity neighbourhood which was once known as "Kaffir Kasie" Then on to the Jan Hofmeyer Settlement, once designated for “Poor Whites” It is one of the most racially integrated communities in the New Country, and yet stuck in Apartheid Time & Poverty, the Forgotten People of our land, right next to the Boer Heroes' Monument. From there we proceed to “Fietas” where we witness the “Scars Of Apartheid” – the derelict properties that were once people’s proud homes. The homes of the 67 Indian Families who resisted Apartheid’s “Group Areas Act” and were forced to move, many to Lenasia The final stop is the Braamfontein Cemetery here amongst many, lies Enoch Mankayi Sontonga. The composer of Nkosi i'Sikele hymn and our national anthem. His grave stands out as a Monument to Black Pain over African graves that were flattened in order to create a park for Whites. We will get transport back to the Kitchen for an afro soul food lunch and a debrief of the walk This tour provides a great way to meet fellow travellers but also locals.
Ashley And Sifiso
I am a social entrepeneur , a maverick thinker and a cultural & political activist. I grew up in Sabie, Johannesburg & Swaziland and a political exile in Tanzania & North America, I returned to South Africa in 1996. I live with my family in Brixton where we have lived for the past 21 years. The Roving Bantu Kitchen is an afro soul food eatery and cultural centre where we have set out to make a difference on a small grubby corner in Brixton. The walking tour provides an important platform to discuss, to debate & to share our experiences
We specialise in fresh authentic afro soul food. You will get to try a full lunch experience. Vegetarians are catered for
a soft drink: either homemade ginger beer or freshly pressed sugar cane juice
