What you'll do
You will experience Hangul—the Korean alphabet—at this calligraphy workshop of which I am a member of the team. Your teacher will introduce the calligraphy supplies, such as the paper, brush, inkstone, and inkstick. You'll learn how to grind an inkstick on an inkstone, and also, how to hold and handle a brush. After some practice drawing basic lines, you will start writing Hangul calligraphy. You can write any words you want in Hangul, and don’t worry if you don’t know any Hangul words. Your teacher will give you samples of what you might like to write and help you while you are practicing. It's also a good idea to think of the word you would like to write before you come to class. The calligraphy artwork you create will be a special souvenir of your trip to Korea. It will also be a great opportunity to understand and experience Korean traditional culture.
Materials We'll provide paper, brushes, an inkstone and inkstick, and an apron.
I am a member of Geulssiteo, a place to do calligraphy. We offer one-day calligraphy classes and my calligraphy artist friends have been invited to carry out this experience. We all met at the Sungkyunkwan University calligraphy club in Korea and currently work together doing Hangul calligraphy classes. We have our own roles at the workshop. Joo Yeol is a Korean Hangul instructor. He is fluent in English, knows Kanji well, and can speak a little Japanese. Da eun is a Korean Hangul instructor. She is not fluent in English, but can introduce calligraphy theories and how to write in English.
