What you'll do

This walk aims to present you with a vivid experience on how social conflict has shaped Barcelona, its streets and buildings, how the old medieval city became a modern city amid a clash between upper and working classes.

The hidden places of this activity are in the main streets of Barcelona, with this tour you will be able to see them for yourself, for example, I will show you where the medieval wall used to be and explain the amazing history of its destruction. I will bring a couple of maps of the city grid to show you how urban transformations emerged from the nineteen century to our days.

You will understand why modernist architecture is an expression of the Bourgeois classes. I will use the facades of the Eixample, the nineteen-century enlargement of the city, to give examples of the social meaning of these changes.

Then walking towards the Sant Antoni market, we will find clues of the old industrial city and how working classes used to live in the center just next to factories.

I would love to hear your questions and comparisons from your home town because I believe there is something that we all share in common as city dwellers.

Meet your host, Juan

I have a bachelor in Sociology from Barcelona University and my master thesis was about residential mobility. I've lived in half of the districts of my city and, currently, I am a happy neighbor of Eixample. One of the things I enjoy the most is strolling and zig-zagging through Barcelona. In my urban experience, History, Art and Leisure are totally compatible.

Where you'll be

- The frontier of the old and the new city: I will introduce the topic of urban changes in front of the old university building next to Plaça Universitat.

-A quiet corner of the bourgeois neighborhood: we will stand in front of a beautiful crossing of Enric Granados, which a typical place of modernist buildings.

-Mercat de Sant Antoni: a spot to discuss the impact of working classes in the city and how our modern times are changing it.
