What you'll do

Explore Copenhagen's coolest underground neighborhood. Refshaleøen was once the city’s shipyard from 1871 and has a feeling of an industrial area on the edge of big change. Now it's a mixture of creative entrepreneurs, thriving small crafts, flea markets, a houseboat community, and street food markets for the locals. And yet, is still a hidden, unknown gem. Meet Danish Architecture Center guide Andreas Hammershøj, who lead you through this gritty industrial neighborhood on a one-hour walking tour. We'll stop at one of Bjarke Ingels Groups’ (BIG) most talked-about new projects – Amager Bakke – Copenhagen’s innovative power plant/ski slope. Visit a microshelter student housing complex and former float plane hanger building. Hear about brownfield sites that are becoming home to world-class restaurants and festivals. We end at Airbnb host Claus Pedersen's houseboat. It's docked in one of Refshaleøen’s former shipyards – surrounded by fellow urban pioneers and scattered bars and restaurants. Inside you’ll find antique shipping artifacts, industrial photography, and classic Danish furnishings. We’ll provide snacks and refreshments and hear about how he has created his unique home.

Where you'll be

We’ll be exploring the unique Copenhagen neighborhood of Refshaleøen. Formerly the site of the city’s industrial shipyards, the area is transforming. Today many of the once-abandoned sites and buildings are home to world-famous restaurants as well as entrepreneurs, markets, festivals, innovative new student housing – and the world’s first ski slope/power plant designed by the renowned Danish architecture firm, BIG.
