What you'll do

**Currently only guided in GERMAN**
This is not a sightseeing tour - this is a tour about life.

What does it mean to flee from your home country and why did we have to do so? What are the Austrian policies on asylum and messures of integration? How do you start a new life in a foreign country - when you had to give up your previous one?

And who could explain these issues better than those who experienced it themself - like us?

Meet with one of us by joining this very different tour stoping at different stops: talking about our experience of fleeing from the war and settling down in a new country. We will explain the different challenges or ways we or other refugees had had to undertake: we speak about the arrival in 2015, the Austrian asylum procedure and the integration of refugees.

If you are interested in alternative tours and social-political topics, you will love the tour! And if you have heard about the so called "European Refugee Crisis in 2015" and would like to understand its dynamics, this is the perfect tour for you! It gives you the opportunity to listen to refugees, the war in Syria, the challenges that Europe had, etc.

** Please note that this is not a sightseeing tour but has the task of explaining a complex socio-political issue.**
Other things to note:
The tour takes place no matter the weather.

We are Kenan and Ahmad, recognized refugees in Austria. We came to Austria in the summer of 2015 during the refugee "crisis". It is important to us to explain to society what fleeing from his country and migration to a new one means, to clear up prejudices and to create encounters. Only by talking to each other, we can understand each other. That's why we work as guides for SHADES TOURS, a social business in Vienna, which offers moving tours on different socially polarizing topics.

Where you'll be

The tour topics range from "the arrival in the new country" to "arriving in the center of society"- and thus leads from the Vienna Central Station, which in 2015 was an important hub and supply point for arriving refugees, via several stations to U1 station Keplerplatz.

In between, stations will be visited related to the subject of flight, asylum and integration.

The tour was very good! We didn't manage to visit all planned stops but that was because we asked so many questions in the beginning. Definitely worthwhile if you want to find out about the experiences of refugees (escape route, asylum process, first steps in the new country). I would have liked to hear more about migrant communities in Vienna, but we ran out of time. Still a very memorable afternoon, thank you!

For whole of my life I’ve been living in Vienna but in only two hours Alaa gave me a completely new perspective of the town and what it means to come here as a refugee. I wanna say thank you to him for sharing the story of his life which is in strong contrast to the “only bad news are good news”-concept of our every day mass media. For sure his way from Iraq and Syria to Austria was a very difficult one - nevertheless he has kept a positive attitude of thinking with lots of humor! Thanks again from Jochen

We did the tour with Alaa. He was a great guide but more so were the moving stories he told us about the experiences he made on his journey to Europe and his current situation in Vienna. Many thanks for having this shared with us.

When I first saw this guided tour on Airbnb I was a little sceptical but decided to join and it turned out to be a really interesting experience as I got to know a little more about the refugees' crisis and all the process they have to go through to come to Europe, the story being told in the first person by a person who's actually living under the refugee status. I recommend this tour not only for people interested in politics and matters related to social crisis bus also to the general public since this gives a good insight of the conjuncture we live in.
