What you'll do

The 60 minutes will be a deep dive into design and coding for games, ending with a product you'll publish online for keepsake. We will build a point-and-click adventure situated in a low poly environment, immersing the player in virtual reality. In this lesson, we use HTML and Javascript (JS), but no coding experience is needed. Our lesson consists of three parts:

First, we design the environment; what will the scene look like? How should the user feel? We will spend time assembling and tweaking the scene. Second, we add interactions with the environment. How does a user trigger a power-up, without a keyboard or a mouse? What happens after the player activates a lever? With functioning game mechanics, each person then designs a level, without disclosing details to one another. Third, we conclude the lesson by challenging each other to complete one another's levels.

At this point, your game will be accessible online. You will additionally have access to private, customized materials and tools to expand your game--whether you wish to publish as an app, sell on steam, or market the web game title.
Other things to note
Great for folks new to coding: popular with parents, kids, and couples. Upon request, happy to adjust dates, times, location, or group size. I also host "Build a Dog Filter" abnb.me/GFEpWpfUlO and "Build AI Game Bots" abnb.me/6m8S7SPRlO.

I've taught 6 times at UC Berkeley as head student instructor, ranging from topics in discrete mathematics to machine learning. I'm a current PhD student in artificial intelligence at UC Berkeley and have published research in computer vision and robotics.

I was recognized as one of the top 16 student designers in the world for "Web & Mobile" by Rookies Co. July 2017. Since then, I've received 3 other international design accolades, most recently named an international semifinalist in design for social impact by the Adobe Design Achievement Awards in May 2018.

Alvin is very enthusiastic about teaching and incredibly helpful. He even suggested other resources to learn more! My 7 year old and 12 year old took his lesson and both left happy and excited about VR. He is a very nice guy, warm and seems like he is always smiling. Great intro to coding VR games!

Great experience in VR that’s tailored to your coding knowledge (or lack thereof in our case). We learned some basics that were enough to motivate us to continue learning and had a great time!

I thoroughly enjoyed this VR game learning experience! It was a great starting point to understand how games are constructed and how 3D models are designed. I built an animated 3D elephant in a virtual environment within the hour! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone with a wild imagination and wants to apply that in a limitless virtual world!

This was a great experience! I bought it as a gift to my partner, who has some coding experience, and I came along with my pretty limited coding experience. Alvin was a great teacher who managed to make it work for both of us. He has a great strategy for covering a bunch of foundational info in only an hour, so that you walk away with tools and ideas to keep exploring beyond your class time. He's also very encouraging and great at explaining concepts. A fun way to spend an afternoon, whether you're looking for a way to build your skills or just for the experience itself!

Alvin is an easy going guy who very easily can get you up and running in an hour with the basics of coding a VR experience. I have very limited coding experience and by following his clear instructions, I could get the object to be and move. He provided an internet ready computer and we started straight away. The only thing was that he he had one VR viewer (headset) that he showed on his iPhone which unfortunately broke during the session. He was apologetic about this to us.

Had a blast yesterday! Alvin is such a fun and patient teacher. I had no experience in coding at all and managed to create something fun under Alvin’s guidance. Very satisfying haha.
