What you'll do

The Tour is based on the History of the City, and its architecture it also covers several aspects of English Language, and the origins of phrases we take for granted. The duration is around 2 hours, and it's a gentle walking pace around the city. Canterbury's history stretched back over the millennia, from pre-Roman settlement to the present day city bustling with visitors, students, and locals alike. The footsteps of Pilgrims, and parsons, are etched into its fabric and the tour takes you in their footsteps. The tour is fully accessible for anyone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues, which given my work with the elderly I feel it's important to be inclusive. You will not find this tour in any guide book. All content is exclusive to this tour.
Please note under 14 Year-olds will be admitted 'free of charge', but must be accompanied by a full paying adult, unaccompanied children will not be admitted.
Re Parking and transport questions please use the online messenger and I can help with where to park, walking directions, bus routes and or rail routes. I am only a message away and ready to help answer any questions you may have.
The Meeting Point is right by the Canterbury Christchurch Gate, signposted from all over the city, no more than 10 minutes walk from all the car parks and the city stations.

I have been conducting both day and night time tours in the city of Canterbury since 1991, although my background is in Hotel Management, my ethos is always about putting my clients first. I am a writer and producer, and also volunteer for the Blind and Older people, to help them with everyday life. I live within a mile of the city centre and can offer tours at short notice, so if you're staying and need to book me just call me and I'll be there.

Where you'll be

Canterbury's history stretches back over the millenia, from pre-roman settlement to the present day city bustling with visitors, students, and locals alike. The footsteps of Pilgrims, and parsons, are etched into its fabric and the tour takes you in their footsteps. Starting in the Buttermarket, we trace the name of the city of Canterbury, and its place in English History, from St Augustine's arrival in 597 to the Saxon Churches, and the Normans.

Really interesting tour that definitely appealed to the history geek in me! John was incredibly well informed and kept the stories brief and interesting. The tour also made efforts to fit itself around COVD-19 regulations.

John is almost a part of the very human history of Canterbury that he presents. Wherever we went, he was recognised. His commentary is packed full of amazing details - I loved the bit about Mercer Street especially- and he recommended the best pub in Canterbury for me to warm up with delicate soup and a fearsome fire afterward. Brilliant!

John's tour was informative, entertaining and inspiring-- he's awakened in me a sense of curiosity for history. His humor and personality warmed a chilly Canterbury morning. He's also a rock star in town!

Great experience. John is very knowledgeable and a good storyteller. He let us see Canterbury in a way with an eye for detail that we would not otherwise have experienced.

The tour with John was absolutely fascinating and even in the wind and rain, we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. John has a really detailed knowledge of the area and definitely knew his stuff. It was amazing listening to his stories and information about parts of the buildings that are in plain sight but that you never really notice. We definitely learned a lot and had a great time.
