What you'll do

A pleasant half-day cycling tour filled with ancient streets, quiet streams, shrines, temples, gardens and cherry trees in the less crowded part of the Higashiyama district. Some of the most impressive sights Kyoto has to offer are packed in this short ride. NOTE: the route changes slightly depending on the time of the day.
MORNING RIDE: we'll ride through the Geisha districts of Miyagawa-cho and Gion (before the crowds arrive) and then head North following the charming Shirakawa river. We'll stop at Heian shrine, the impressive Sanmon gate at Nanzenji zen temple, then follow the Philosopher's path all the way to Ginkakuji (Silver Pavillion) bridge but not before a quick visit at Honen-in temple. Later we'll follow the Kamo river and head back to the our starting point near the centrally located Sanjo Keihan Station.
AFTERNOON RIDE: we'll follow the same route but skipping the Gion geisha area (too crowded by then) and adding instead Chion-in temple gate.
Other things to note
The tour has a length of about 12 km, is completed in about 3-3.5 hours and is mostly flat. It is suitable for all levels of fitness. The tour will be canceled in case of very inclement weather.

I was born in a town in the north-east of Italy and I have always had a great passion for traveling, an interest that has led me to visit over 30 countries all over the world. For the past 18 years I have been living in Japan, which I have visited far and wide, especially by bicycle. After moving to Kyoto I discovered many hidden gems in the city and the beauty of the mountains and the countryside that surround it. I would like to share my experience and passion with you.

This tour is a great way to bike around the area and see several temples and shrines. We also went to Gion which is very interesting. It was very safe and the bikes were in great condition. This was a good way to spend our first morning in Kyoto.

Awesome Idea for having an initial view of the main touristic places in Kyoto. Riding Bicycle with a local like Luca is the best choice: not only to feel safe and move faster, but to take magical shortcuts and small old streets around Kyoto (something you would never do nor alone or by walking). In addition, Luca a has live for many years in Japan so we really can share a unique optica for your journey, with personal and history tips about the city or pedaling there. If you are a bicycle lover and you want to have an excellent and alternative view of Kyoto, please go with Luca.
