What you'll do
First we gather and get to know each other over drinks. Once the mood is humming, I'll tell a short folk tale or myth drawn from the great storytelling traditions of the world. Based on responses to that story, the programme of that night will be spontaneously created. The stories that follow will be told with time taken for the audience to respond after. What did they feel, which part of the story speaks most loudly to them? In this way, everyone in the room plays a part in creating and receiving the story. The stories are not all from Amsterdam but have been told, evolved and lived with here. The city's left its fingerprint on each one. When told all together the stories will leave us with a flavour of Amsterdam and how our lives take place in it. The stories are drawn from the mythologies of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. A great many will be Celtic, with a good dose of British folk tales thrown in.
Over 9 years I've learned deep stories that used to hold together the culture of Western Europe. I like to share these with intimate groups so they can learn these stories, and how they can hold different layers of meaning. This is both art for pure enjoyment, and to listen to our own and others lives to uncover where we are all at at this stage of the journey. I ran this event for 12 consecutive nights in 2018, sharing over 20 stories in all. I choose the story based on who shows up on the night. I love the sense that anything could happen, right up until the first word is spoken.

Where you'll be
We're going to be in the heart of Jordaan. This is Amsterdam is at its most old, storied and atmospheric. We'll be in a mezzanine room with a view onto the canal at night, with it beautifully lit up. It's gorgeous venue that starts the story before any word is spoken.
