What you'll do

We will meet at a pier in the Marina/Presidio district of San Francisco where we will be located near the Golden Gate Bridge. The views of the water will be spectacular and because of the size of the pier we will have more than enough room to spread out and try our techniques. Make sure to arrive early so you can find parking and pay for it if need be near The Warming Hut cafe.

Once all the guests have arrived we will learn to setup the equipment we will supply with very detailed explanation of how and why we use particular gear. Once we have setup our rods, filled our bait in our traps we will learn the different forms of casting and the technique of reeling. Because we are fishing for crab there is a different approach to how you catch crab off of a rod and reel.

Because of Department Fish and Game laws we will not be allowed to take home any Dungeness crab unfortunately not only because the Bay is a protected estuary but because we will be crabbing outside of the regular season. As a result we will be catching rock & red crab which are edible and delicious crabs to take home.

Please join me as many others have to see if spending an afternoon out on the waterfront of the bay, meeting new people and learning a skill is right for you!

Great for big groups, corporate outings and team building exercises! Please inquire directly if you have 10+ people

My name is Alex and I am an avid fisherman and an ocean lover. I am a born and raised San Francisco Native who grew up on the bay's wonderful and diverse coastal lifestyle.

After being a sushi chef & a ceviche chef early in my professional career it's no wonder I have an an affinity for quality seafood and fresh sustainable practices. With 10 years of crabbing I have honed my experience and knowledge of these tasty crustaceans. From my time in restaurants and in the service industry for nearly 15 years I came to realize I needed to start my own business encompassing different passions of mine.

I have been running "The Art of Crabbing" which is THE original bay area crabbing experience going for Dungeness. The season for Dungeness goes from Nov-June.

Where you'll be

I will be either outside of the Warming Hut Cafe or on the pier itself depending on when you show up. Because it can get very busy I usually stand closer to the pier with almost a poles sticking out of my cart. If you booked the afternoon session I will more than likely already be out on the pier. I shouldn't be too hard to miss and I love this location because of the view, accessibility to drinks/snacks and relative ease for catching something!

From the start, Alex was understanding and flexible with anyone arriving late and managed all his guests and whatever they needed so well. We were first timers and found him on the pier easily, were up and crabbing immediately, and learned so much in the plenty of time we had there. I immediately wanted to come back and will recommend this to everyone, but like Alex says, it’s for the experience of learning to crab more than bringing a catch home and I had no problem just watching and learning from an expert. Be prepared for the weather and bring a cooler if you want to.

John was our host and he was great! He was very helpful and taught us the basics. We had a great time and caught a lot of crab and fish. My 7year old loved it too and was excited using the fishing poles. Thank you John for a great time, hope to see you at the pier again! -Lisa and Eden 😊

A great experience - we crabbed, exactly as expected. Disappointing that we are staying in a hotel and could not take home our catch for dinner.

Great experience! I enjoyed spending a day out in SF. Bring some snacks and a drink or stop by the local Cafe. It is a 3 hour event. Alex is very knowledgeable and even helped me catch some crabs with his net because I couldn't reel any in. You will catch some but reeling them in is hard! Highly recommend!
