What you'll do
Our walk takes us through the inner city, learning about Auckland’s history from early Māori habitation through to modern new developments. We are known as the city of sails but what is even more unique is that we are a city of extinct volcanoes. We are situated on the beautiful Waitematā harbour and we learn some Maritime history. We walk past the Art Gallery and into Albert Park and the Auckland University seeing a Māori Marae and Fale Pasifika before returning to our meeting point via the Town Hall, Aotea Square and side streets, pointing out places of significance along the way. Auckland is undergoing a great re-vitalisation so there has never been a better time to explore our great inner city.
All this walking will make us hungry and thirsty so we will visit an opulent art deco cafe hidden away from the crowds of Queen Street where we have a reservation for complimentary tea/coffee and lovely fresh snacks to finish our morning.
Travelling solo? I am happy to walk with just one person and this allows our tour to be more flexible.
Other things to note
This tour is only available on Saturdays and Sundays (and holiday periods).

I am a qualified librarian and places I have worked include ten years at the Auckland Museum Library where I learnt a lot about the history and culture of Auckland. I have researched extra information and stories for our walk. A born and bred New Zealander, I enjoy living in Auckland, one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world with 39 percent of the 1.5 million population born overseas.
Where you'll be
Our walk includes the recently upgraded Takutai square which has a market on Saturdays promoting New Zealand foods. We bisect the central city through recently created laneways. We will see historic and newly built buildings. We visit Albert Park, an oasis in the city, and view Old Government house, Waipapa Marae and the Fale Pasifika within the Auckland University grounds. We then head to Queen street via Aotea Square and side streets.

Really great walking tour around the cultural heart of Auckland. Diane had incredible depth of knowledge about the history of the city, so much that if we ask her anything she could go on for days talking about it. Walking around with her was like walking around with our own personal Wikipedia of knowledge.

Diane led us on a very nice informative tour of Central Auckland that was a great way to see and understand the reconstruction of her city. She was adaptable to our changes, and the final stop at Cooke's Restaurant was indeed a delightful treat!
