LGBTQ+ History Tour of Brighton

Brighton, United Kingdom

Experience hosted by Ric

90 mins
Up to 5 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

We explore Brighton from a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer perspective, in a colourful 90-minute walk along the beach and historic city centre.

This tour won the iGap Travel Award for the LGBT Tour of the Year UK 2018, and Time Out called it the '5th Best Thing to Do in Brighton'.

We take in over 200 years of history including Regency Dandies, 1960s lesbian and gay life, and political activism. We discover prominent historical figures including Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde and Dusty Springfield, as well as some extraordinary unsung heroes, including a 19th-century lesbian diarist, an Edwardian 'drag king' and a 'same-sex' marriage in 1923.

I’ve lived in Brighton since 2007 and I love helping people explore and experience this amazing city.

I hold the Blue Badge in Tourist Guiding. I’m a Member of the Institute of Tourist Guiding and am held accountable to their Code of Professional Conduct.

From 2001-2013 I worked on the LGBTQ History Tour of Soho with the community development organisation centred, where I developed the tour content and trained new accredited guides.

When not guiding, I can be often found training English pronunciation and performing improvised comedy.

Ric has curated an insightful and balanced tour which cements Brighton’s reputation as a safe haven for queer people across the years. He is easy to listen and talk to and clearly loves his chosen topic.

No hesitation recommending Ric’s tour. It was insightful, interesting and as someone who doesn’t have a natural passion for history, I really enjoyed it and recommend for anyone visiting Brighton who wants to immerse themselves in the culture

Was such a lovely tour. Full of fascinating, wonderful facts & stories of Brighton & its famous residence. Ric was warm & inviting. He really had fantastic knowledge. Great communication pre tour of giving details on meeting etc. He was very mindful about health & safety, social distancing etc. Also of other members of the public. He gave great tips on things to do & see on our visit too. It went quick as it was so enjoyable. A great way to see otherwise un noticed hidden gems. Highly recommended this tour!

Ric was prompt and friendly, easy going and very knowledgeable. I learned so much about all things gay, lesbian, trans, queer, etc in Brighton and the area. Weather wasn’t ideal (thankfully no rain!) but Ric did his best to keep us all sheltered from the winds and comfortable throughout. A good deal of walking but nothing too crazy and I really enjoyed finding out all the little tidbits (some dating back all the way to the 1600’s) and hidden history that I never would have known about without this tour.
