I am an experienced AirBnB host, and have been giving tours of the smallholding for almost a decade.

At Farlands, we are self-sufficient in growing fruit and vegetables. We grow a large variety of crops, from spinach to good king henry to globe artichokes. We keep chickens, and ducks, and rear turkeys at Xmas. We have two beehives.

We grow soft fruit, and have an orchard of 65 varieties of apples in addition to pears and plums. I graft all the trees. We’re experimenting with perennial veg, and trying to move away from sowing/planting every year. Although we’re not strictly organic (we’re not inspected) we stick to organic methods. We’re no-dig.

I give presentations to interested groups on self-sufficiency and apples, and I’m a member of the Northern Fruit Group.

A lovely tour of the veg and fruit gardens with lots of specific tips on how to live sustainably. And the best bit - visiting the chickens and finding eggs, all in a stunning valley and with James as a very knowledgeable and friendly guide.

We came to James's smallholding to learn more to take back to our allotment (this is only our second year so we have a lot to learn!). James took that into account and gave us countless helpful tips and shared his extensive knowledge with us. He made us feel very welcome, and we really enjoyed the afternoon and left feeling very inspired.

James's tour was thorough, informative, practical and very helpful. James was generous enough to share tips, best practice and contacts with us. His explanations were very easy to follow and put into practice at home. We will definitely be coming back for the grafting course in March. Thanks for a great experience!
