What you'll do

I am originally from Ireland but have been living in Scotland 17 years. I fell in love with Edinburgh 10 years ago. It was the beautiful green spaces that took me in.

The walk will be guided, I will point out plants and wildlife of interest. If you have any particular interests we can focus on these eg birds, trees, butterflies etc. I will tell you stories and facts about the wildlife. I will also cater the walk for your physical abilities.

Other times and dates available along with special requests for day trips, children's walks and other walks in different locations. Just send me a message!

I have been studying nature in my spare time for a long time now and I am passionate about the outdoors. I am currently a self employed gardener so a lot of my knowledge comes from here. I spend my spare time doing various nature workshops and I volunteer with the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Butterfly Conservation and Historic Environmental Scotland.

I find being outdoors calming and always feel better for it and I want other people to experience this too. The more people connect with nature the more they will want to protect it.

I have been taking friends and friends of friends out a lot and they love learning interesting facts etc. I have recently started charging for this and people are still keen to come.

Where you'll be

The Hermitage of Braids and Blackford Hill are a Local Nature Reserve. It is about 150 acers of land with ancient woodland, a river, small hills and fields. This variable landscape creates an abundance of nature everything from badger to Jay birds to orchid flowers. I have been taking locals there and they are surprised at parts they didnt know existed. They are excited when I point out buzzards flying over head or the deer drinking at the river.

We requested a daytrip and went to Longniddry which was a beautiful place I hadn’t been to yet. Aisling is very skilled in identifying birds, by song and from a distance and I saw my first nuthatches which was wonderful! Also various other birds such as a woodpecker and tits. We even saw some wild boar which I’d never seen before either and many interestingly named mushrooms/fungi. I learnt so much and it was a great experience, we had a picnic by the water and even saw a deer! Such a fantastic day, I’d recommend a trip with Aisling if you want to see new birds/animals and learn a bit about nature, she is so passionate about the outdoors and attentive and it was lovely spending time with her.

I had such a great time on this experience. The host, Aisling, took us on a walk through the Hermitage of Braid. Of course, I have to start by saying it’s a beautiful location. I had been there once before and really enjoyed it but Aisling made me love it so much more. She was a very thoughtful guide and made sure everyone on the walk was comfortable at all times. She checked to make sure that the route could be followed by everyone and where there were areas where people had to be careful (steep inclines, mud, etc.) she pointed it out and provided people with alternatives. Aisling pointed out interesting trees and plants and shared some facts about them. She pointed out birds (she knows a lot about them!) and we were lucky to see a huge pheasant. She pointed out a lot of mushrooms and guided us to interesting spots where they were growing. One of the most interesting things I learned from her was galls! These are reactions that oak trees make to wasps that lay there eggs on the tree so that the larvae can feed and be protected. Super interesting! She even found a few late season berries for me and went out of her way to accommodate me to forage for more. Aisling is very friendly, knowledgeable and I cannot recommend the experience enough.

I had a great day trip thanks to Aisling! the experience was beautiful: she spotted many fungus, birds, plants and trees on the way, and gave us lot of interesting facts about them. She was attentive with everyone on the group, making sure everyone was comfortable and having a good experience. You can tell Aisling is super passionate about nature and you can feel that throughout the experience. For sure I will book another walk with her again, and will recommend to my friends! Thanks a lot, Aisling!

I hugely enjoyed the experience with Aisling and she was a perfect host for the occasion. She is very knowledgeable about the area and was very accommodating to all our questions and needs. I saw (and heard) a lot more than I was expecting, and I especially enjoyed finding weird and wonderful fungi! I absolutely recommend the experience and won’t hesitate to sign myself up again in the future. Thanks Aisling!

Aisling was a great host for exploring local wildlife in Blackhill park. She’s clearly very knowledgable and enthusiastic about nature and was happy to share many things that we didn’t know. I would definitely recommend others to try it if you want something different from a standard city tour.

Aisling was an amazing guide! She was very accommodating and allowed me to reschedule the walk because of last-moment change if plans. The walk was amazing and it was incredible how much Aisling knew about all the nature that surrounded us. She was happy to answer all the questions (and I ask many). I would definitely recommend this experience and will try to book another one in a different season, so that I get to learn about different things.
