What you'll do

City walk with sampling of Central American/Belizean foods. We will sample at least 6 - 8 Belizean favorite dishes, all by local vendors and you will learn the history and preparation techniques of each, as we enjoy. Our restaurant is the only one in town that features handmade classic Belizean Tamales so we discuss these, then each person gets a bottled water, and we venture out to a local taco stand, then walk a few blocks to an authentic tortilla factory to taste hot tortillas direct from the ovens. We continue around town to sample Belizean favorites of local foods, everything from street foods to Belizean Chocolate and Homemade Belizean Rum Creams. We can also show you how handmade tortillas are made for quesadillas and burritos and a Belizean favorite - Coconut Buns. We will make 5 or 6 additional stops before returning to the starting point. During the stroll, we experience at least six of the following (depending on the day and taste of the participants): 1) Watch hand-made Papusas being made and sample (El Salvadorian fare) 2) Belizean Breakfast Tacos 3) Classic Belizean Chicken, Rice & Beans 4) Central American Paletas (all natural popsicles made by hand from fresh fruit) 5) Salbutes 6) Garnaches 7) Tomalitos (Ducunu) 8) Panades 9) Belizean Rum Cream 10) Belizean Meat Pies 11) Coconut Tarts 12) Classic Belizean Tamale

We are an American couple, living in Belize for more than four years. We own/operate the first & only non-Belizean owned restaurant on San Pedro’s “Back Street”, Iguana Juan’s. Since our restaurant is in a local neighborhood, we know our neighbors, explore the small hidden gems and “locals only” places that you most likely wouldn’t get to see while traveling on your own. We are always ask about “our story” of how an American couple came to open a restaurant in Central America. We are familiar with the food & hospitality business, having previously owned one of the largest comedy clubs in the United States, at this business, we had two restaurants (a 105 seat Tex-Mex restaurant, and a 54 seat steak & Chop House, as well as a 275 seat comedy club featuring major celebrities on a regular basis. We moved to Belize when we sold this business

Where you'll be

Starting at Iguana Juan’s Restaurant for Classic Belizean Ceviche or gaucamole, and watch how handmade tortillas are made. Then across the street for the quintessential Belizean dish, Stew Chicken, Rice & Beans. On to food stands where we sample garnaches, salbutes & other “street food”. We tour the tortilla factory & enjoy one “hot off the press”, meet a local “Rum Cream” maker, watch & sample handmade Papusas, & end with a cold Paleta
