About your host
I hold a Ph. D. in Palaeobiology (the study of ecology and evolution in deep time) and am a Chartered Geologist. During my research career I carried out research in the Smithsonian Institute Museum of Natural History, The Natural History Museum, London and The Natural History Museum, Berlin. I have run geological walks for a wide range of groups in various places in Scotland since going freelance…

What we’ll do
Easy walk on the streets of central Edinburgh to find fossils in the building stones and pavements. Discover fish, ammonoids, plants and other fossilised critters and find out more about 'deep time' and the history of life on Earth as recorded in the rocks. Looking at buildings and the historic landscape of Edinburgh also leads on to stories about the social and cultural history of the city.
What else you should know
The tour does not require you to know anything about geology or fossils before coming along. Al is used to dealing with a wide range of clients from other geologists to people at science festivals.
What I’ll provide
Handouts about the sites
Hand lenses and magnifiers
What to bring
Clothing for active travel around the city; sunblock or wind/waterproofs as needed; drink and a snack if you like
Any prescribed or over-the-counter MEDICATION you might require
