What you'll do
You're in for something special as we walk through east Kyoto and a take an up-close look at the traditional culture preserved in this historic district. With stops at two of Kyoto's lesser-known large temples, we'll see 1000 glittering gold Buddhas, massive dragon paintings, and serene Zen gardens. We'll also visit several secret spots off the usual tourist route. You'll hear rarely-told stories of vengeful samurai, opulent palaces, unfaithful emperors, and gruesome war monuments (you're not gonna believe what's buried here). We'll also stop at one of Kyoto's oldest sweetshops for a small local snack included in the tour price. We'll even walk down Kyoto's most haunted street (ghost sighting NOT guaranteed, sorry!) and visit a secret temple where locals call spirits back into this world. The tour will finish with a walk through the back alleys of Gion, the old geisha neighborhood of narrow wooden houses and maze-like streets. If we get lucky, we may spot a geisha or two going about their daily business. Along the way, your expert guide is available to answer your questions and offer additional sightseeing tips. Total time is 3 to 4 hours depending on walking pace and group size.
Hi, I'm Terin! After earning a master's degree in history, I moved to Japan and now run a tour company here in Kyoto while pursuing writing. Since 2014, I've become one of the top ranked guides in the city. As a fellow foreigner there are no language barriers and I can give you the real scoop on life in Japan. Kyoto is rich with fascinating details and hidden historical gems that you miss out on without a guide, and I love it when guests get engaged in the local culture and ask tough questions. Enjoy the expertise of a seasoned guide and fall in love with timeless Kyoto just like I did!

Where you'll be
Starting at Shichijo Station, we'll walk the backstreets of eastern Kyoto through local quiet neighborhood streets up towards Gion. Drinks and snacks (both traditional and modern) are available for purchase along the way. We'll finish at Gion-Shijo Station by the Kamogawa River, just across from downtown Shijo with easy access to shopping and sightseeing. I'll be happy to point you to some good places to get lunch.
