What you'll do

We’ll meet at my house on Kilmore Road and from there we’ll make our way down to the Urquhart Bay Woodland. We’ll pass the old and very picturesque Kilmore Cemetery on the way there before venturing into the woods themselves. Locally known as ‘The Cover’ this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the best examples of wet woodland anywhere in Europe. It’s a haven for wildlife and a little oasis of calm away from the crowds in the village centre.

Two rivers Enrick and Coiltie run through Drumnadrochit and these two meet at the edge of the woods. The confluence is a sun trap and you can stop here to take pictures and even paddle in the rivers. Keep an eye out for the little fish that like to nibble on your toes, an optional free fishy pedicure is part of the experience!

From here we’ll cross the River Coiltie, you will get wet feet so prepare to take your socks and shoes off! Do note that if the river is running too high and fast then for the sake of safety we’ll go no further.

Once across the river it’s a very short walk to Urquhart Bay where you’ll have a panoramic view over Loch Ness. Again, if you love the water then this is the place to come and say you’ve dipped your toes in Loch Ness.

We'll end this part of the walk with a dram of Scottish Whisky and a toast to the Loch, the Highlands and Nessie. Slàinte!
Other things to note
The river is usually only ankle deep at most and it doesn’t run particularly fast. The idea is that this is a fun experience not a crazy gorge walk!

Where you'll be

We’ll go to Urquhart Bay Woodland a little oasis of calm away from the busy village centre. River permitting we’ll cross over to Loch Ness and maybe... just maybe... Nessie will put in an appearance...

We’ll pass Kilmore Cemetery on the way, the site of some commonwealth war graves and a picturesque little spot in its own right.

If the river is too high for a crossing we'll stop and have that dram down by the river.

Really lovely, thoughtful host who tailored it to the weather (Which was miserable). Also very knowledgable and passionate about the area. Very helpful and gave me some good ideas of others things to do during my stay too!

Top notch tour with a super lovely and knowledgable guide. Changed the route for us to a better one so that we could make the most of everything despite the rain!

Our woodland hike with Toby was absolutely fantastic. Not only did he share excellent knowledge of the environment and community, but he went out of his way to provide us with personal touches throughout the hike. We visited numerous idillic spots which were peaceful and very relaxing. The scenery was stunning and the views of Loch Ness were beautiful. We would definitely recommend!
