What you'll do

Cyclists often travel to fun and exciting destinations and leave without a chance to experience the local rides and cycling culture. Often because of the cost and complication of traveling with a bike and not knowing where the local rides are.

My experience is intended to avoid visiting cyclists from leaving Mexico City wondering how the rides are over here. Taking you to one of the most iconic local rides and afterwards taking you to coffee and breakfast to a cycling café favorite among local riders.

The tour includes:
- About three hours of riding
- A road bike in perfect riding conditions if you can't bring your own
- Local climb up Desierto de los Leones and through a natural recreation area
- Mexican breakfast at local cycling café
-Photos of the experience

What you need to bring:
-Cycling kit, shoes and helmet
-GPS or cycling computer
-Pedals other than Look, Shimano or Time

I've practiced cycling since 2011 and have done everything from amateur races, to tackling the worlds longest climb, gran fondos, vintage cycling and solo bikepacking tours. The bicycle has allowed me to meet people from all around the world, and explore cities and regions in a unique way.

Where you'll be

Desierto de los Leones is a local climb through the road that connects México with the satellite city of Toluca to the west. The road is a 16 km climb with an average gradient of 4% and some short steep sections above 7% gradient. It's a fast and fun road to ride and a coveted KOM in Strava. The summit leads to a natural area called Desierto de los Leones, a forest that overlooks the city and a local favorite because of the peace and fresh air.

Federico is a great cycling guide. He showed me his favorite pre/mid ride stops while going on an incredible ride out to Desierto de Los Leones National Park. I got to see parts of CDMX that typical visitors don’t get to see and see the city’s cycling community. I can’t wait to come back and ride with Federico again!
