What you'll do

In this fast-paced half-day workshop, you'll be guided through a full introduction to the endangered craft of marbling by professional marbler Lucy McGrath. We start with a brief background of marbling's history and uses, illustrated with genuine vintage marbled books, then moving onto the practical stuff with a demo on how to mix mordant and prepare paper. Then it's straight onto marbling, with Lucy guiding you through different patterns and techniques, starting with getting you used to the behaviour of paint on the water, then building up techniques (and your confidence) gradually. You'll end up with 10-16 of your own beautiful papers, which will be posted to you having been dried and flattened. You can even opt to have one made into your own hard-back notebook.

Learn more about Lucy

Lucy

I am one of the last professional paper marblers left in the UK and am on a mission to breathe new life into this critically endangered craft. I use fresh, contemporary colours & techniques in my marbling and know the tricks to get the brightest, deepest tones. I started Marmor Paperie with an aim to make marbling accessible to more people and was awarded the Cockpit Arts/Arts Society Award in 2016, moving into the south London craft incubator that my workshops are based at. I love getting people excited about marbling - even those who claim to be unartistic always love it by the end!

Where you'll be

Cockpit Arts is a craft incubator, the only one of its kind in the UK. It offers dedicated studio spaces for craftspeople, which you'll be able to glimpse as we walk through the building. There's a fantastic variety of crafts housed here, including weaving, wood turning, ceramics & metalwork. Based in vibrant Deptford, there's plenty of places to enjoy lunch in after the workshop, including charming cafes, vegan bistros and a craft beer taproom.
