Experience hosted by Carlos Silne

4 hours
Includes drinks, equipment
Up to 8 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

You'll meet with myself and a group of hand-selected musicians and dancers who have a great spiritual and personal connection to these rituals.

First, we will give an explanation of how the ritual is practiced, the significance of the ritual in contemporary Afro Cuba, and discuss how the musicians and the dancers communicate with each other during the ritual. Then we'll watch a demonstration of summoning several different Yoruba spirits or "Orisha" with music and singing while the dancers manifest the presence of the spirits with movement.

After the presentation, we will have an instructional segment where we will have the opportunity to learn to sing, dance, and drum to summon a specific Orisha. We will practice and master the basics, and the evening will culminate with the guests joining the musicians and dancers to summon the Orishas together.

- All communication will be translated in real time from Spanish to English.
- No music or dance experience is required.
- Although these rituals are religious, we can also practice and enjoy the rituals on a secular level.

Meet your host, Carlos Silne

Host on Airbnb since 2018

I'm Carlos, originally from Santiago de Cuba and now living in La Habana. My family has practiced the Yoruba religion for generations, and I am happy to see how music and dance rituals from our religion have become popular around the world. I would like to share with you the true experience of using music and dance to summon and celebrate the spirits or "los orishas" of the Yoruba religion as we do here in Cuba.

Where you'll be

We'll be carrying out the ritual and class in a private space that has been used for Yoruba rituals for many years. You will see religious artifacts, hear stories from the people who regularly visit the space, and feel the energy of generations of spirituality and art.
