What you'll do

While anyone can hike a trail in the National Park, there are many geologic features that the inexperienced eye cannot see. With a knowledgeable geology guide by your side who can tell you all about the geologic features in the rocks, how the landscape was formed, and the geologic history behind the rocky mountains, your hike is a completely different experience than if you just went to the park alone. We will study the rocks up close and learn to identify minerals and other features using a provided "hand lens" tool. We will also enjoy scenic views along the way! Snowshoes and/or microspikes are provided if trail conditions are icy. NOTE: This hike follows different routes and has different meeting places in the summer and winter. Summer hike: (June - October) 5.6 miles departing from the Glacier Basin Park and Ride Winter hike: (November - May) 3.5 miles departing from the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead Summer meeting place is a 30 minute drive into the park from Estes Park. Winter meeting place is only a few minutes from Estes Park.

Where you'll be

We will hike along a trail in Rocky Mountain National Park and study geologic features along the trail. Many of these features are not obvious to the untrained eye. As a geology guide, I can point out features such as metamorphic textures, striations in the rocks carved by glaciers, elongated mineral grains, and intrusions of younger rocks into the older rocks. Your hike experience will be completely different with a geology guide.
