What you'll do

After meeting at the farm, we will head straight out into the woods and fields to explore seasonal Scottish wild food. Our walk starts down the hedgerow, were we will look at common hedgerow plants that make excellent additions to the kitchen. Depending on the season, that may be sloes, blackberries, cherries, yarrow, hogweed, plaintain, rosehips, and many more. Before we head into the woods, we will stop at our woodland campsite for a quick cup of coffee, tea or wild herbal infusion, We will then go into the forest to hunt for edible mushrooms. We will cover only those mushrooms that are easily identified and with no close non-edible lookalikes and in season. While in the woods, we will talk about where to forage and the laws around foraging in Scotland.

We won't just cover food uses, on our walk, we will also cover some medicinal herbs and plants that are used for natural dyeing.

We will head back to our farm where we will get to sample a selection of wild food, some we make together if in season, before we help you pack up your finds and say goodbye. Everyone leaves with a copy of our Wild Kitchen guide and recipe book.

We follow strict COVID procedures and have put in cleaning and social distancing protocols. We ask that while in our farm shop and workshop spaces, you keep a mask on unless seated.

We are passionate smallholders who moved to our small farm about 5 years ago- adding dairy goats, sheep for fibre, chickens, ducks, geese, cats and a peacock. We grow and make most of our own food and love to share that passion with other people. Kat is an author and photographer who specialises in craft and DIY how-to books, online courses and events. From the farm studio, she hosts popular workshops and retreats on foraging, sourdough bread, cheese making, foraging and wild supper clubs. Kat has a Masters in Human Ecology and is passionate about how people and the environment mix

Where you'll be

Our farm sits at an intersection of highland and lowland landscape. We have access to many acres of unimproved fields, hardwood and softwood forests, an abandoned nuttery and some prime chanterelle foraging in autumn.

Kat was great. We had our little puppy with us and Kat was so understanding and involved the pup in the experience too!! We had a great time (and great weather!) on our foraging experience! Would highly recommend. Thanks!!

What a delightful afternoon! Kat was so relaxed and hospitable straight away, offering us a coffee or tea and delicious home-made sourdough bread and homemade raspberry jam in her charming farm kitchen, as soon as we arrived. We eased into the afternoon and it gave us an opportunity to have a blether with the other guests who were lovely. Walking in the surrounding area was blissful and so relaxing. My 12 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We learned about lots of plants and wild fruit and came away with a selection of our wild treasure. Can't wait to cook my mushrooms tonight! This was my first airbnb experience with something handy for my home and it's opened up a new world of opportunity to me and my family for things to do at the weekend. I am feeling inspired! Thank you Kat and hubby and family.

Kat is an incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and generous host. She was very welcoming and greeted us with freshly baked sourdough bread, scones and goats cheese made with goats milk from their farm. All of it was absolutely delicious. The foraging tour was informative- Kat really knows her stuff- we got to sample some delicious fayre and were taught to recognise plants that we are likely to be able to find elsewhere. I can't recommend this experience highly enough.
