What you'll do

Boston's many historic landmarks are linked by a 2.5-mile brick line known as the Freedom Trail. Walking at a leisurely pace, we will follow this popular route—deviating into side alleyways to avoid crowds and visit hidden history—while I share with you the tumultuous story of Boston prior to the beginning of the American Revolution. As a former park ranger, I believe history is best shared as a cohesive, character-driven story; to that end, I've designed a two-part narrative describing Revolutionary Boston during the 1760s and 1770s. On Part II, we travel into Boston's North End, discussing the transition from rebellion to war from 1768 to 1775 through the lens of historic figures such as Samuel Adams, Royal Marine John Pitcairn, and Paul Revere. With Freedom Trail landmarks as our backdrop, we will examine both sides of an explosive argument that would lead to the creation of the United States: Sons of Liberty versus Friends of Government. Our 0.8-mile, 2-hour storytelling stroll begins at the Old State House (ca. 1713) and passes the many historic sites found in Boston, concluding beside Copp's Hill Burying Ground (ca. 1659), within view of the Battle of Bunker Hill monument.

Ted

I moved to Boston five years ago with a BA in U.S. History and Archaeology. Upon arrival, I became an Outreach Educator for the Paul Revere House (ca. 1680), one of the Freedom Trail's most-visited historic sites. I soon moved up to become the Visitor Services Manager for Old South Meeting House (ca. 1729), where the Boston Tea Party began. By 2015, I joined the National Park Service and spent two years as a Park Ranger for Boston National Historical Park, leading daily tours through Boston and interpreting Faneuil Hall (ca. 1742) and the Battle of Bunker Hill (ca. 1775) monument and museum.

Where you'll be

After many years leading tours along the Freedom Trail, I know numerous hidden routes in Boston and historical gems as we weave our way through town. Due to timing, however, we will not enter any historic locations, aside from Faneuil Hall (ca. 1742) and Copp's Hill Burying Ground (ca. 1659). Our tour will conclude in Boston's North End, with easy access to world-class Italian dining—I am always happy to provide my local recommendations!
