What you'll do

We'll meet up at King's Buildings House on the University of Edinburgh King's Buildings site. From there we will head up Blackford Hill first via the pavements before hitting the grassy slopes near the Royal Observatory. From here we will walk up to the summit of Blackford Hill, which has views over Edinburgh and as far as some of the major mountains of the Scottish Highlands (cloud permitting!). From here we will descend into Blackford Glen, which was scoured out by glaciers, and then head for the highest point in the Braid Hills, Buckstone Snab. This higher vantage point offers better views to the south into the Pentland Hills. From this point a number of descents are possible to return the party to the public transport network to return to central Edinburgh.

Where you'll be

One of the joys of Scotland is the 'right to roam' enshrined in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. This means there are many possible routes that can be used to link up the two summits and start and end points. One particular spot we will visit is Agassiz's Rock. Here, in 1841, the Swiss geologist and palaeontologist Louis Agassiz, first confirmed the action of glaciers from traces in the rocks where there were not glaciers at the present time.
