What you'll do

We'll visit the French quarter of Hanoi where layers of architecture are displayed: Sino-Vietnamese temples, French magnificence and Art Deco buildings are mixed with stalwart Russian, tube houses, and concrete-of-the-future. I'll share with you secret stories that the buildings have carried with them as time goes by and turbulence swept through the city. Imagine how Charlie Chaplin spent his honeymoon here. Imagine a generation of local artists who obtained education in European arts, and experimented their newly-developed skills with designing, the families of traditional mandarins and wealthy traders who occupied this little space - until the revolution changed everyone's life. As eclectic as Hanoi itself, the buildings represent the burden of life and the lightness of being. Let your curiosity roam in the "living museum" of Hanoi, and ask as many questions as you'd like. Maybe after that you'd see that buildings are not just buildings. Communal tradition, colonisation, revolution, wars, globalisation all compete to leave their marks in this town. As your personal guide, I'll be happy to walk you through the thick and thin of Hanoi history, its architecture and living space.

Lien

Born in Hanoi during wartime, grew up in extreme poverty and hardship, Lien manages to make herself a global citizen. Extensive travel and experience living overseas made Lien realise how Hanoi history shapes the lives of its residents. Such history can be seen through Hanoi's buildings. Unlike the "controlled chaos" of traffic that challenges your minds crossing streets, buildings are immobile and give a safe distance for your imagination. Unleash your curiosity and experience the lightness of being a Hanoian with Lien.

Where you'll be

Among the buildings that we visit, No. 7 Nguyen Thuong Hien housed an aspiring revolutionary who chose to study English in the 1940s and hide secret materials under the stairway. No. 45 Nguyen Thuong Hien nearby, now a KFC store, was where one of Vietnam's most talented musicians composed the national anthem at the age of 21.
