What you'll do

If you love art, history, and eclectic neighborhoods, this is the experience for you! We'll take you through the heart of South Philly, Queen Village, and South Street on this experience, showing off our favorite shops in the world famous 9th Street Italian Market, beautiful murals and mosaics, and stories of immigrant history.

We'll start off in the Italian Market - the country’s oldest and largest everyday open-air market. We'll go to some of our favorite shops, meet some store owners and hear their personal stories of food, history, and community, perhaps sample some food, and we'll tell you the not-so-common stories of this colorful neighborhood. We both like to stay open to visiting any shop that catches *your* eye, there's so many!

Then we'll visit the Philadelphia Magic Gardens! This jaw-dropping mosaic art installation is impossible to describe, but is one of the most beautiful and inspirational labors of artistry in the world. Your tour concludes at the Magic Gardens. From here, your guide can give you recommendations on where to go to eat, drink, and shop along Philly’s eclectic and dynamic South Street. Now that you're a bona fide local, you may even want to make an appointment for your new Urban Adventures tattoo.
Other things to note
Tour runs rain or shine, dress appropriately for the weather.
Personal shopping, additional food and drinks, and gratuity are not included.
This is *not* a food tour, food samples are not guaranteed.

Where you'll be

We've developed relationships with many merchants in the close-knit Italian Market over many years. We both have our own favorites and we each like to show our visitors our own local side of Philly, so we tend to keep the exact shops we'll visit flexible, to give you a more unique experience! We've also partnered with the Philadelphia Magic Gardens to show you this incredible piece of local art up close - it's one of our guests' favorite stops!

Nina was my guide on the excursion. She was so fabulous! And she knew interesting details that even people who were native did not know.

Nicole was our guide. She possessed a personal knowledge because she previously had lived in the area. She knew the history of the famed artist Isaiah Zagar. And, she had a personal relationship with the owners of the shops in the Italian Market. Although it was cold, we totally enjoyed our tour.

I gave this tour as a gift to my parents, who have lived in the Philadelphia area for almost 55 years. What I learned from them is this: even if you've lived in the Philadelphia area for decades, this tour may expose you to an area you have never been to before, which is tremendously refreshing. Do it!

Chuck was absolutely wonderful, so conscientious, respectful, considerate and friendly. My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. We appreciated that the respect and genuine interest and support Chuck has shown to the merchants in the Italian Market have made this experience the wonderful opportunity for sharing that it has become. It really touched me at one of our starts to notice that check was listening intently with genuine interest to be information being presented by the person in the shop. He has done the store many many times and heard the stories many many times, yet was genuinely and honestly interested in listening. He was very warm and friendly, taking the time and making the effort to get to know the people in his group. This statement he made that has really stuck with me is that he wanted the tour to feel like taking a stroll with a new friend. He has definitely achieved making that happen! I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone, and would even do it again if I have the chance!! Thank you to Chuck for creating a fantastic experience that we would not have been able to have on our own!

This was as amazing tour. I never would have explored this area if not for the tour. I loved the places we visited. My favorite was Di Bruno Bros. Cheese market. Our guide showed us so many historic spots and stopped often to point out neat things. This is a must do tour.
