What you'll do

We'll meet at the statue at McKendree University and take a stroll through the oldest campus in Illinois. Then we'll head uptown and visit several historical landmarks in the town's main shopping district. A brief break will give everyone a chance to take a peak in their favorite shop or stop by the Historical Society for a postcard. We'll get back on our way by seeing the Mermaid House Hotel and stopping to admire the Victorian architecture on the surrounding houses. Lastly, we'll wander back through an 1800's neighborhood and discuss the trolley and how it relates to St. Louis by being the opposite end of the original Delmar Loop. Overall, we'll be walking about 2 miles. Please have appropriate footwear. Although well maintained, the bulk of the tour being in areas built in the early 1800's means that not everything is wheelchair accessible. Those that can not comfortably be on their feet for 2 hours should not sign up for this tour. I will pass out water bottles at the beginning of the tour. Not all shops will allow someone to use the restroom without purchasing something. So please use the restroom before hand, or expect to buy a souvenir.

Learn more about Leslie

Leslie

I moved to Lebanon about 10 years ago and was immediately taken aback by it's charm and history. I've since spent a lot of time learning about the history of this Victorian era, little town. I've spoken with the Chamber of Commerce, Brickstreet Businesses (an organization of the stores on the main drag), visited with members of the historical society, and read everything I can find. For a short time I even owned a dress shop on the brick street.

Where you'll be

Many of the places we'll be stopping are very unassuming to someone who doesn't know the historical significance. For example: McKendree's Bothwell Chapel houses the oldest church bell in North America; the Mermaid Hotel kicked off Lebanon's hospitality by once housing Charles Dickens; and the main street through town (St. Louis St.) is made of brick because there was once a trolley that ran all the way to St. Louis.

More tips

This is a slow paced walking tour, but does have one notable steep hill to get to the center of town. There are sidewalks throughout, but some are original from the 1800's and may not be level.
