What you'll do

Learn the basics of screen printing on to fabric with paper stencils in this 2.5 hour workshop at my fully equipped print studio in Stoke Newington, Hackney.

You will have plenty of one to one support and time to explore your creativity in this lovely space as classes are currently limited to just 2 individuals if booked separately and up to 4 if booking as a private group. Please check the discounted prices for group bookings.

I will guide you through the whole process and we'll each try a quick sample print on to fabric, to spark ideas and show you the ropes. You'll then have time to create paper stencils using scissors and/or scalpel, ready to print your own unique design onto a tote bag or tea towel. You are welcome to explore the many books and visual references around my studio to inspire and help you get started.
There will be time to experiment and pick and choose colours from the studio collection.
All inks are water-based.

Price includes a choice of tote bag or tea towel for each participant.

I have a beautiful, colourful space at the Chocolate Factory Studios, a real hidden gem in the heart of Hackney, home to 27 studios of creatives in ceramics, fine art, photography, illustration and my own practice, textile design.

Since my MA in textiles at the Royal College of Art, I've been screen printing and making interior products for over 20 years and my work has been sold in many of the London design stores and independent retailers throughout the UK.

I have taught classes to both adults and children in craft venues, schools, and my own studio setting. I love teaching and seeing all the wonderful, diverse creativity unfold in the process. Follow my work life and makes on Instagram @helenrawlinson and my print classes @screenprintn16

Where you'll be

The Chocolate Factory is a secret hideaway for some 30 Hackney creatives and was established over 20 years ago by its artist founder, Keith Ashley. It's a beautiful Victorian conversion and complimentary new build set within a flower filled cobbled yard. As a working studio, please allow for a little bit of chaos but plenty of charm! Our next door neighbours are the wonderful Jackson's Art where you'll find a treasure trove of art supplies.

We did this as a family of 5 today ( 3 kids aged 11-15) and we had such a brilliant time. Helen was excellent, really knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and inspiring. We are already planning what to make when we come back! Helen described the process and gave us a quick demo at the beginning, then we made a test piece each, this was really useful to help work out what was easy, what took too long and the different effects you can make. Then onto the real thing, between us, we did a tea-towel, 2 tote bags and 2 t-shirts. All designs really unique and showed off our individual styles. Everyone came away with something they were proud of, we all finished in time and it was nice to help each other etc. In terms of space, Helen has a lovely artist's studio and there was plenty of space for us all. We all wore face masks which was no trouble and Helen had plenty of hand sanitiser and there was space to socially distance as appropriate. Overall a fantastic workshop - would heartily recommend!

This was a great experience that me and my mum really enjoyed. We had never tried screen printing before but Helen explained the process really clearly and gave us clear instruction for the best result. We had lots of fun thinking of different ideas for what we wanted to make and cut out and are so pleased with the results - we screen printed on a tote bag and a tea towel and they both look great!! My mum insists she is not an arty person so I think this would be a great activity for anyone of any ability who wants to give something new ago and have a lovely memento to take home. Helen was very friendly and patient, and made the environment feel safe (covid secure) without feeling clinical. Would highly recommend!

It was a great experience. Helen is very good in instructing what to do and giving great advise in achieving your "project". Time was flying. I left with a unique shopping bag, lots of good advise and great spirits. Thanks Helen for this inspirational morning.

Excellent experience! I took my sister and my mum along who had never done any screenprinting. Helen showed us her and other people’s pieces in her beautiful cozy studio, which gave us the inspiration for our own pieces, as well as trying out simple designs and getting used to the technique first. She was so patient with us and gave us lots of tips and resources to use for our final designs. We are all so excited and pleased with our finished bags, and it was such a fun morning, I’d 100% recommend it to anyone wanting to try something new! Thank you Helen :D

We had an excellent time with Helen, she really made us feel at home tea and biscuits in arrival. She took the time to explain what we were going to do and explained the process thoroughly. She also gave just the right level of direction which helped us create some nice pieces.
