What you'll do

You’ll enjoy the traditional life of old Japan through our preserved tools and techniques. You’ll get to chop firewood and cook rice over an old-fashioned fireplace. You’ll catch fish to eat from the nearby river or from a barrel of water. You’ll make a fire in the central hearth and cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients. It is a truly fulfilling experience to prepare and eat a natural meal like this while immersing your mind and body in the peaceful Japanese countryside.

I began hosting this rural experience program in Suisha-mura two years ago. Before then, in 2016, I participated in a forum sponsored by the Council for Outdoor & Natural Experiences (CONE), where I learned skills for the management of nature experience programs and attended workshops on the organization and operation of events from the customer’s point of view. I also have experience as a kayak guide, from which I learned the basics of tour guidance and event management.

I grew up in the Japanese countryside, along the way learning the ways of coexisting with my environment. During my JICA International Cooperation volunteering in Africa, I spent two years living in an environment without access to electricity, gas, or a guaranteed water supply. Through this particular experience, I had the rare opportunity to consider what it really means to live with nature and to appreciate the grace of life. I bring all of this appreciation with me to Suisha-mura to ensure that what you experience is undeniably unique and special.

Sitting beneath the thatched roof around the old-fashioned fireplace; chopping wood to cook your rice; grilling live yamame mountain trout… These beautiful experiences of traditional Japanese living have become increasingly rare for visitors to this country. It would be the greatest pleasure for me to share this with you and provide you with a new-found appreciation for the preciousness of life that is so often forgotten in the indifferent convenience of our modern societies.

Where you'll be

Suisha-mura is a small village located in a mountain valley about 30-minutes drive from downtown Fujieda. Upon arrival, you’ll cross a suspension bridge over the clear stream water to find a 250-year-old traditional Japanese house with a thatched roof nestled against the mountainside, beside which sits the old waterwheel for which the village is named. You’re sure to fall in love with the quaint, rustic beauty of this little haven in the countryside!
