What you'll do

We will gather together to talk about stress and the physical and emotional toll it takes on our lives. We will discuss meditation and Shinrin-yoku and their benefits. Our group will then walk on one of Park City's many trails, spending time discussing the concept of Shinrin-yoku, the "Medicine of Being in the Forest". Shinrin-yoku is healing medicine: some trees even have organic compounds that are beneficial in helping our immune systems fight off killer cells. A general feeling of well-being and happiness are results of Shinrin-yoku. Each participant will then find a private place and spend a little time communing with nature and quieting our minds. Our "walk" is not a hike, however. During our time together we will walk slowly alone for a period of time. We will touch, smell, and listen to our environment.

I have lived and worked in Park City for 30 years. My "happy place" is in the forest, among the beautiful Aspen, Pine, Maple and Ponderosas. Shinrin Yoku is a Japanese philosophy, which simply translated means "forest bathing". Studies have found a decrease in stress hormones by those who spend time in the forest. I have hiked and snowshoed the vast wooded lands in and around Park City. Recently I have studied the benefits of taking time to commune with nature. Shindrin Yoku allows you to touch, smell, and communicate among some of the oldest and largest organisms on earth, the Aspen.

Where you'll be

One of my favorite places is the meadow at Pine Valley. Surrounded by old Ponderosa Pines and Aspen trees, the flow of "forest bathing" is unencumbered. Pine Valley also has a beautiful river flowing through it.
