What you'll do

We'll take a tour of St. Louis Cemetery #1, our most famous cemetery, which requires a licensed guide to enter. We will visit the tombs of historic and famous New Orleans residents from Voodoo Queens to Nic Cage (seriously!) Along the way we'll entertain and educate you on what this cemetery means to New Orleans history. New Orleans’ Cemeteries offer more than beautifully ornate tombs- they are steeped in history. Created in 1789, St. Louis Cemetery #1 has stood for more than two hundred years, and within its maze lies the monuments of stories of New Orleans most famous- and infamous- residents. But it’s more than just the dead- on this tour you will learn the about the burial customs, traditions, and people that made New Orleans what it is today. Take a walk with us through New Orleans history seen through the eyes of those that have left us.

Monique And Aurora

Monique is a seasoned cemetery professional who has done loads of research on the various cemeteries of New Orleans, especially St. Louis Cemetery #1- the cemetery, as she says "people are dying to get into." Ok, corny jokes aside (She'll keep those to a minimum!) Monique loves to share the experiences of New Orleans' history of stories that emanate from our beloved cemetery and the people who are entombed there. She's not a classroom academic, she knows how to make a tour of the cemetery fascinating for any visitor. Monique is a licensed guide for the cemetery, which is required to enter.

Where you'll be

We won't just walk around the cemetery (which is beautiful it its own right)... you'll be accompanied by a licensed guide who has studied the cemetery and will impart the fascinating stories she's culled from years of research. At St. Louis Cemetery #1 you will see the tombs of New Orleans notables Marie Laveau, Homer Plessy, and even the empty tomb of Nick Cage. No one should leave New Orleans without visiting one of our “cities of the dead.”
