What you'll do

Join me on a leisurely 4-mile* walk through the beautiful Sussex countryside, vineyards and an ancient hollow way following in the footsteps of Romans, commoners and a king fleeing for his life!

*3-mile route is also available for private groups.

We'll start our walk in a village just a ten-minute drive (20-minute by bus) north of Chichester, passing through vineyards, farmland and a beautiful tunnel of trees.

After a short walk uphill, we'll see the restored windmill built in 1740 and have time to admire the 360° views of the Sussex countryside. The Isle of Wight can be seen from here on a clear day.

Learn about Boxgrove Man, the oldest human remains ever found in England, a Neolithic settlement and see WWII radio direction-finding structures. Hear local folktales and learn a little Sussex dialect.

Depending on the time of year, we may see a range of butterflies and birds including buzzards, swifts and skylarks.

While lunch is not included, it is available after our walk from a local pub serving great food made from locally sourced ingredients.

Chichester is the nearest railway station. There is a regular bus service from there to the meeting point. Just ask if you'd like to know more.

I've lived in West Sussex all my life and love sharing the beautiful countryside and the secrets hidden along these sometimes hard to find footpaths.

I've researched the area, speaking to locals and local historians to learn more about the layers of history hidden here, reaching back over 500,000 years.

Where you'll be

The walk will lead us along a lovely public footpath shaded by an avenue of trees, through vineyards, fields, and along an ancient hollow way through a magical tunnel of trees . The route then goes uphill a short way to the restored windmill and where we can admire the 360° views.

What a great way to explore some of the beautiful Sussex countryside. Kathryn was a great host who has a good knowledge of local history and folklore and told us some wonderful stories about dragons and devils throughout the walk. The walking pace was comfortable and Kathryn made sure we had regular stops giving her time to tells us about the local sights. The 21/2 hours flew by and I would definitely recommend this walk.

What a lovely, smiley, friendly guide Kathryn is! Such fun and wonderful folklore from devil's to fairies to rhinos! Thank you so much for sharing your time, positive enthusiasm and local knowledge Kathryn. A scrumptious lunch, (the gravy jus was absolutely lush), in The Anglesley Arms afterwards who followed all government Covid safety guidelines.
