Secrets of the Reina Sofía Museum

Madrid, Spain

Experience hosted by Michael

2.5 hours, Hosted in English

What you'll do

First we will introduce ourselves and head to the museum. The tour will last around 2.5 hours and during that time we'll see and discuss more than thirty works ranging from the "must-see" pieces, a few hidden gems, a few really strange works, and the works I feel you will enjoy based on your background/interests. The tour will really focus on the stories and symbolism behind the work and the untold scandals and personal histories of the artists who created them with particular focus on the more underrepresented queer and female artists. We'll take time to discuss the experience and struggles of women artists like Maria Blanchard, Sonia Delaunay, and Ángeles Santos in a typically male dominated art-world. We'll go into detail about Dalí and his intimate relationship with the famous poet Federico García Lorca and how their partnership gave rise to some of the most famous paintings and poetry in Spanish history. We'll spend a significant portion of the tour discussing Picasso's Guernica and how the rise of Fascism changed the course of what we now call "modern art".
Other things to note
Photos are allowed in most areas of the museum. Lockers are available for your bags and belongings.

Where you'll be

We'll focus on the main galleries of the museum beginning with the Black Spain movement in the 1890's up until the fall of Fascist Spain in the 1970's. We will follow the evolution of Picasso, from his days as a young man copying Toulouse Lautrec in Paris, to his development of Cubism, and finally his masterpiece Guernica. We will really focus on the Spanish perspective to "modern art" and the ways it influenced art globally.

The Reina Sofia Museum was toward the top of my list of must-dos in Madrid, and I'm so glad that I went with Michael as my guide. He was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and I really appreciated his curation of the tour. Thanks to his guidance I spent time with pieces I may have otherwise bypassed. I came away with a better appreciation of the works Michael showcased, and learned fascinating stories about the artists. Highly recommended!

Michael was very knowledgeable of the pieces at the Museo Reina Sofia. We met at our agreed upon location and time, and he had our tickets all ready. He showed us the key pieces contained within the museum and gave us great history about the pieces. (It made sense he would know, since we learned he's also an art professor at the university and an artist himself!) We liked how he incorporated additional LGBTQIA+ insight to the discussion. Towards the end of the experience, Michael also gave us some recommendations around Madrid, one of which is Toga Restaurant. It was definitely the best restaurant we went to during our 14-day trip in Spain! Thank you, Michael!!!

A great experience that adds life to key pieces within the art museum. Michael has a talent for personalizing the tour and providing extensive knowledge on key works - including their ties to politics, history, and even personal relationships among the artists. I would suggest doing both the Prado and Reina Sofía museum tours with Michael as you are able to gain a deep understanding of how classic artists in El Prado inspired contemporary artists within the Reina Sofía Museum. These are both great tours - whether you are an art lover or simply want to begin learning about Spanish art.

Michael was amazing. So informative and helpful to have him with our family of 7. He pointed out things we never would have noticed, gave us background about the era and times of the art, and was easy to understand. A great tour liked by all.

The visit of the Reina Sofia museum with Michael was very agreable. His background and the knowledge of the art he showed me, made the visit very interesting. More than a lesson in contemporary art, it was a dialogue, forcing me to think, to reason and to react. Very nice!

Excellent experience! Michael is very knowledgeable having studied art history and being an artist himself. He came prepared, and was able to show us the connections of many of the works to earlier works in other museums. Highly recommend!
