What you'll do

After we collect you from Baldock Station and bring you back to our 15th century cottage we can discuss your expectations for the day and work out the best type of horse for you. Over a welcoming drink you can tell us your riding experience; we pay serious attention to evaluating the characters of each rider as we aim to provide you with the ideal equine partner for your day with us. Having signed a disclaimer and had a hat fitted you’ll lead your prospective horse in from the field, and be shown how to (nominally) groom, tack up and do ground work. After mounting (comfortable saddles) there’s a 45/50 minute lesson outside on paths or fields then a home made lunch so you can relax and process what you’ve learned, followed by another 45/50 minute hack out. We can go as slowly as you like, you won’t be pushed out of your comfort zone! Forgive us in advance for putting the horses’ happiness first :-) - but your experience of viewing the world through the ears of a willing happy horse could start you on a really wonderful equine adventure. If you’re an experienced rider we might ride to a pub where there’s a small paddock for the horses to graze. Afterwards riding back to the farm where the goats will greet you like long lost friends (especially if you've brought them back a cold chip!)

Nicky And Richard

This experience involves learning how the horse relates to its rider. We’ve spent the last thirty years training horses, sorting out other people’s ‘problem ponies!’ and teaching nervous beginners. I’m a qualified British Horse Society Instructor, we both love yoga which we do to improve our riding. We aren’t impressed with the normal way people are taught to ride and therefore only take a maximum of 3 riders per session so there are NO large groups where everyone just follows the lead horse. We run a very ethical yard - the horses (mostly arabs) are barefoot and live outside 24/365 in small herds (a muddy horse is a small price to pay once you see how happy and calm they are). I love feeding people and make bread daily; Richard grows all our vegetables and our hens provide eggs so lunch means minimum food miles

Where you'll be

We take you on a personal adventure to horsemanship - which can be very different from just riding. We teach you to experience the world from the horses’ point of view. But we’re happy to point out badger setts, fox holes, local fauna and the jackdaw tree. It should be a unique experience on gentle, sensitive horses who enjoy going out. Companionable silence is also an option if preferred - we want you to have the best, relaxed time possible

More tips

Complete beginners more than welcome. We collect from Baldock Station (trains are better from Finsbury Park which is easy to get to on the underground), just buy a day return from the station. If heavier than 85kg must contact before booking. Lunch or supper included depending on time of session
