What you'll do

We'll start off with an introduction to mezcal, how it's made, and how it's unique in the world of spirits. I'll then hand you over to Noel who will show you the magic in mezcal! We'll taste 6 different, small-batch, wild agave distillates from Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Puebla. While we'll talk about terroir and flavor profiles, this is in no way similar to a pretentious wine tasting! Our goal is to help you discover the why "mezcal doesn't make you drunk - it makes you magic!" and to appreciate the native culture and philosophy that goes into this ancient beverage. You'll learn about native legends behind mezcal, mystic practices, the struggle to keep mezcal sustainable, and why it's important to support small, family producers. Mezcal is a portal into the Mexican psyche, and we want to help you to peer through. We'll also serve botanas (Mexican snacks) and water to keep you hydrated. Questions are very welcomed, as are requests for second and third tastes. Afterwards, you are welcome to stay for dinner (not included in the price) and sample some of Noel's traditional plates.

Noel and I have been giving mezcal tastings since 2014. Noel is from a family of mezcaleros in Guerrero, and is an expert in both the process of making mezcal and the richness of native culture behind it. He is also an Aztec cosmologist, artist, and chef and delights in weaving his knowledge (and humor) into tasting sessions. I have been learning and writing about mezcal since moving to Mexico in 2012, and have had the great fortune to visit many producers. We have recently signed a publishing contract to produce a book on Mexican cuisine, mezcal, and native culture.

Where you'll be

Mezcal is an up-and-coming star. But although it's found more regularly on cocktail menus, it is rare that one can learn about the traditions, culture, and history behind it from one who was raised in a mezcal-making family the way Noel was. More than that, you will get his insider knowledge as an Aztec dancer, artist, and chef.
