What you'll do
For nature lovers looking to experience Momijigari (Maple Leaf Viewing) without the crowds, I'll take you on a tour of some my favourite, lesser known spots around the town of Kawachinagano. Each place is a local maple leaf hot-spot, virtually unknown outside this small town. Starting with a short bus trip into the hills, we will visit famous for it's association with a very important samurai and known locally for its gardens, especially in Fall. I can tell you about a turbulent time in Japanese history and how the small town of Kawachinagano was pivotal during this time. From there, we will walk to the mysterious Enmei-ji temple, dedicated to a god of war and hidden in the shadow of Kawachinagano's forested hills and get some insight into Japanese Buddhism. Next, we will stroll through Chihayaguchi with its terraced fields and traditional houses before stopping at a ryokan called Nanten-en who will prepare for us a Kaiseki lunch and give free use of their natural hot springs. Finally, we will take one final wander around the rustic village of Amami to visit some unusual little shrines nestled among the farmsteads before finishing at the quaint Amami Station.
I write for a number of Japan focused websites and assist several temples in the Kansai area with their English information as well as working front desk for a historic local ryokan. Having lived here for 5 years, my passion for Japanese history has taken me to many little known places within Kansai and I spend my free time exploring the back roads and temples of Kawachinagano. Over the years, I have learned many rare stories and Insta-friendly photo spots in my adopted hometown. From time to time, I also lead historical tours around some of Kansai's biggest landmarks, especially Koyasan.

Where you'll be
Kanshin-ji and Enmei-ji temples have spectacular displays of maples and hold a number of national treasures. Through many visits, I've learned a great deal about them that is not available in any guide. If time and weather is on our side we can take a slight detour to visit some tiny shrines whose history is known by only a handful of people. Nanten-en is a traditional inn who have kindly offered a special lunch deal for guests taking my tour.
