What you'll do

We will do a 3 mile round trip loop hike that lasts approximately 1 hour. We will start 30 minutes before sunrise, so that you can watch the sun come up from the top of Cowles. There are numerous trails that can be explored and enjoyed in Mission Trails Regional Park, but this is my favorite trail, and it goes up to the highest point in the City of San Diego; Cowles Mountain. The hike starts from BARKER WAY (NOT THE FRONT SIDE OF COWLES), and is 3 miles in total.

If it is your first time to San Diego I could happily answer any questions you have, and give you local recommendations of favorite places to visit, restaurants to dine at, or a bar to sip a local beer. There is a great coffee spot nearby that I can point out to you to grab a smoothie or ACAI bowl after the Hike

We can chat as we hike along, or I can guide you along the trail and we can just enjoy the natural surroundings and sounds of nature. I would love to share my regional knowledge about San Diego and the surrounding areas, and what we are seeing on the trails. My family helped to preserve 100's of acres of native habit in the region, and I would love to share my passion of the local flora & fauna with you.
Other things to note
We will be sharing the trails with other hikers, hikers with dogs, and possibly a few mountain bikers. San Diego typically has very clear weather, but we do get fog or low clouds from time-to-time.

Hello there you lover of the outdoors!!! I have guided, hiked, climbed, and backpacked all over this wonderful world of ours and I am now living back in Sunny San Diego (My Hometown). I've professionally guided hiking trips all through Europe, South America, and here in the States. Most recently I hiked the John Muir Trail and completed a Cross Country Bike ride for Cancer Awareness. I am always out on the beautiful trails here in San Diego County, and would love to share my love of the local flora & fauna with you! Come learn, enjoy and explore this little slice of SD.

Where you'll be

LYFT or UBER would be a great option to get to the Barker Way Trailhead if you do not have access to a car. We hike: Barker Way Trailhead > Barker Service Road > Cowles Mountain Summit > Top 1/3 of Cowles > Barker Spur Trail > Back where we started. The hike is moderate to challenging depending on your level physical fitness. People of all ages enjoy this wonderful regional classic hike here in San Diego. It is best to drive to the location.

Andrew was a great guide! He was knowledgeable about the area and provided some great recommendations on places to visit while in San Diego. Andy truly knows what he is taking about out on the trail and goes out of his way to make sure you are able to finish the hike safely. Despite it being a cloudy morning, i got some amazing views. Would recommend this hike to anyone who is visiting SD.

Andrew was a fantastic guide! Couldn’t appreciate his knowledge about the mountain we hiked and the vegetation and wildlife more! If you’re wondering if you should do this, stop wondering and do it. You won’t regret a thing once you start seeing the gorgeous sunrise over the mountains or when you’re enjoying the coffee that Andrew provides at the summit. 12/10 would book again!

I set this up for my 18 yo son. Andrew was wonderful to work with. He communicated everything needed and was very knowledgeable. We are from Michigan so for me to leave my son with a stranger from across the country, I was feeling a bit uneasy. Andrew put me to ease immediately. I would highly recommend him. Kai was with Andrew and this is what he said. "Andrew knows his stuff. I learned about the area, hiking skills and more. He was super nice and treated me well. I LOVED hearing all of his stories. He has been everywhere. If you are considering doing this hike.. do it. You wont regret it.

Loved the morning hike with Andy- he’s a great guy and with lots of stories to share along the way! The view at the top is absolutely worth waking up early for- I highly recommend this experience to anyone! I’m not a frequent hiker but I found this to be manageable- there are slopes but a little huff and puff will get you there :) Thanks Andy for your hot cocoa, bottled water and fruit bar, will do this again in a heartbeat!
