What you'll do

Hidden secret gardens, 'baby' Giant Sequioa, Rogues, Vikings and possibly even a monster are the things you'll hear about and see during our walk around the Craigmonie Woodland and Balmacaan Estate. Meeting at my house we'll head towards the old estate and wind our way through a mix of oak and native Scots pine woodland on the path up to the viewpoint. Along the way you'll hear the history of the area from visits by Robert the Bruce, the legend of a Norse Prince who lent his name to a couple of landmarks and a Bard that got into a spot of bother with the local clan chief. The viewpoint itself will give spectacular views over Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness where you can pause and soak up the scenery. We'll stop here for a while to have a dram of malt whisky and toast the scenery before meandering back home under the crag and through Hazel woods.
Other things to note
The path is mostly good quality singletrack and forest path and there is a fair amount of ascent involved so a reasonable amount of fitness is required.

I'm passionate about slow and sustainable tourism and I want visitors to really slow down and enjoy the area they're visiting. I've worked in tourism for nearly 15 years and have been a keen hill-climber and nature-watched since I was very young. I can give you insights into the environment that you might not get elsewhere and I'm also a Gaelic speaker and can help you pronounce the place-names and features you see around you in the Highlands.

Where you'll be

We'll spend most of the time walking through ancient woodland situated above Drumnadrochit. There's the option to explore the jumble of rocks beneath the viewpoint and discover an old 'secret' garden hidden in the grounds of the old estate.

Craigmonie Viewpoint is the highpoint of our walk affording great views over Urquhart bay, Loch Ness and Drumnadrochit. We'll stop here to soak up the views and enjoy a generous dram of malt whisky.

So informative and cool person to talk to. I got to learn so much about the area of Loch Ness and about the Grant Clan (who are my ancestors). Toby paced the walk according to my own needs

Arrived not sure what to expect having never done a walking tour before, was greeted by Toby (who is a great host), and set off on our walk, Toby is really knowledgeable of the area and we really enjoyed hearing about the local history and battles between clans. Also really appreciated the dram of whiskey at the highest point. Thanks so much!

This was an amazing experience all around. Toby made me (and the dog) feel welcome, answered my 1 million questions and had such a deep knowledge of the plants and area, it was a perfect morning walk in the Highlands (while respecting covid restrictions -Toby takes one household at a time to make sure everyone is safe!) Highly recommend!
