What you'll do

On this Street art walk i pay dedicated attention to the world of graffiti, i focus on different levels of graffiti and share unique aspects that are invisible to people who don’t have any affiliation to the art world of the streets. Visitors get a wider knowledge of why the graffiti artist are motivated to do what they do as i give you an in depth explanation of some of the pieces.
Graffiti artist are now formal and informal revivers to derelict spaces around Joburg or wherever there's a seemingly mundane culture, with rich stories and history that no one pays attention to.
Street art fills up the void, it is that missing culture that is needed to bring life to an environment, it is an expression of thoughts in imagery and the freedom of different minds, who express themselves through spray painting walls and telling different stories. I've been a part of the 4 elements of the hip-hop movement from a very young age so you'll be walking with an insider.
Other things to note
Please note that this is a walking experience in the Johannesburg city center.

I'm Bongani Mathebula aka "walking encyclopedia". I’m an artist and a professional tour guide recommended by Forbes, CCTV America, Thompsons Travel, just to name a few. I specialize in history, art and tailor made tours in Johannesburg. I've lived in almost all major districts in Johannesburg, and in my daily commute, Johannesburg city center would be the place to spark my interests in history and the arts, i became fully integrated in the city's culture. Most of my experiences are about introducing guests into subcultures and multiverse cultures of the city in the most pleasant way.

Where you'll be

We'll walk through Braamfontein a district that will make you feel old and young at the same time, Melle street is where i'll show you the first pieces of street art, snap as many pictures as you want, we'll then walk down Juta St unlocking more street art in the back streets of Braam. The journey doesn’t end now, wait until we reach the coolest space where you are most likely to bump into graffiti legends of Johannesburg.

Bongani was a wonderful storyteller who kept us engaged via historical context with humor and intensity. It was a beautiful day for a tour and we got a broad perspective of the underground art and graffiti scene as it emerged in Joburg. The only thing was that those 2 hours felt short, and we could have easily been comfortable with him for 2 more hours. We are really thankful to have met him today...it was an amazing experience. He is gifted and thoughtful.

Bongani is himself an artist, and though his stories, we understood the messages and sense of street art. It gave us a whole new perspective and we had a good time together.

This was such a great experience! We saw such great street art and learned so much about the culture. The tour ended at a gallery which provided great contrast and context to the street art we saw. This is not just for those who love art but also those who want to see the city in a unique way.

This was an amazing tour. Bongani has so much experience in the art world in Johannesburg and it was so cool to get to step into it for a few hours. We even ran into one of the artists whose work is all over the city. Highly recommend.
