What you'll do

Whether you use a smart phone or professional camera to take photos, this workshop is for you! As a long time professional photographer and artist, I will give you hands-on instruction on using an ancient painting process along with mixed media to enhance your photographs. We will spend the time creating one-of-a-kind beautiful works of art. Explore wax as an alternative means to create multiple layers of translucent imagery. You will also learn the best glue methods, texture adding tools, mixing colorful pigments, hand coloring, usable exotic papers and more. Workshops are held at her downtown studio/gallery for 1-3 participants and for larger groups at the Museum of Encaustic Art here in Santa Fe. Bring your own photographs or choose from an assortment of images on-hand. This joyful arts & crafts style workshop is guaranteed to bring out your creativity and enthusiasm. All materials and supplies are included. This is a terrific experience for adults or for a family (ages 12 and up). No painting or photography experience is needed!

I am a mixed media artist who has lived here in Santa Fe for 9 years. I have a downtown gallery located half a block from the historic plaza. Every year I have a solo show of current artwork. Such as "Wings", "Route 66: The Mother Road", "Adelita: Mexico's Women Soldiers", "The American Bison" and "Frida Kahlo". I teach encaustic art workshops at Artisan Expo's, the Museum of Encaustic Art and at Dancing Loom Workshops. I also have traveled to teach workshops in Colorado, Arizona and Idaho. For pleasure I hike with my labrador retriever named Georgia O'Keeffe, take photographs of New Mexico cultures and ride my horse western-style through the Southwest landscape.

Where you'll be

For up to three participants, we will conduct the workshop in my studio space located inside 7 Arts Gallery. This is a collaborative gallery with seven local Santa Fe artists. We all exhibit and sell our art here. For larger groups we will meet at the Encaustic Art Institute Classroom inside the Museum of Encaustic Art, which features artwork from over 100 wax artists.

What a fun experience! I've been wanting to learn encaustic art for a long time and I now feel like I can do some art at home after investing in a few supplies. Angel was a great teacher, had lots of supplies to try, and gave great support for my personal projects. I completed two 5x7 pieces to take home. Thank you Angel!

I loved every minute of this workshop and felt very honored to learn this technique from someone with Angel’s level of expertise and talent. She was warm and generous with her energy and thoughtfulness. It was just the right balance of challenge vs. accessibility for me. I feel confident to further explore this technique on my own and am so appreciative of the insights and recommendations provided in the handout that she prepared.
