Welcome aboard my Downeaster 38, "Fred B. Wood"! Designed by renowned naval architect, Henry Morschlad, this Downeaster is in exceptionally good condition. Downeaster's are known as being stout and seaworthy bluewater cruisers. They can be found all over the globe. This experience is available for up to six guests! (Please note that I recently upgraded to a larger Downeaster 38 from an Ericson 27 which is shown in some of the photos!)

Your three-hour adventure starts at Jack London Square. The route will depend on wind conditions; however, our goal is to cross the bay to see the marvelous sites of South Beach Harbor (home of the SF Giants), the financial district, the bay bridge, and then Treasure Island. During the tour, you'll see amazing wildlife; including, flocks of pelicans, sea lions, and the occasional dolphin!

This is an active experience! I will review the basics of sailing (wind angle, general terms for operating the vessel, and rules of the road). You will take a turn at the helm (wheel), manage the sheets that control the sails, and raise and lower the sails. Naturally, you are also welcome to just sit back and enjoy the amazing views.

I am a USCG Licensed Captain. I have been a highly rated Airbnb host for six years and have been around boats my entire life. I have owned and operated many types of sail and powerboats. San Francisco Bay provides beautiful views and wildlife; including harbor seals, dolphins, and amazing birds. In addition, the microclimates in the bay mean you can go from boisterous conditions to nearly tropical calm in just minutes. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with guests!

Where you'll be

We'll depart from historic Jack London Square and (depending on wind conditions) begin our sail in the Oakland Estuary. We'll see the ramps where the Liberty Ships were built by Kaiser shipyards in WW II. As we head west we'll pass by the houseboats of Alameda. We'll then head west and with the wind on our beam cross the bay to see South Beach Harbor, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island before running downwind back to Jack London Square.

Absolutely the most amazing experience! David was an amazing host - very kind, knowledgeable, funny, and has great hospitality. He added small touches to enhance the experience even more. David let us help him steer the boat and put up the sails, and he chatted with us throughout the ride. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone wanting to get out on the water in San Francisco! Ask him about his world famous chocolate chip cookies if you go out with him!

Great experience! Not only did David took us on his great sail boat, but also gave us the opportunity at the driving seat and also set the sails! I would love to do this again!

Superb experience! 100% recommended. Captain David was so thoughtful, communicative, and safe host. This was my 1st sailing trip. He did an introductory talk for safety and fundamentals with handouts and everything. Super helpful and made me feel I was in good hands. The whole trip was amazing. Captain David was so kind, answered all my questions very kindly and served warm appetizers for a special personalized touch. I love the trip and I will repeat this experience with this host.

Our family had a wonderful day on the Bay with David. To his credit, he produced perfect sailing weather... short sleeve temperatures, clear skies and moderate winds! His boat is incredibly well-maintained, spacious and solid, a great choice especially for first time sailors wanting to feel secure, and keep dry. Sailing from Jack London Square provides a nice transition from the calmer Estuary with lots of huge ships to see up close, to the open Bay with its renowned sailing conditions. Whether you want to participate in sailing the boat, or just sit back and relax...it’s your choice. A memorable experience on a great sailboat with a terrific host— I highly recommend it to anyone!

What a great experience! We went out as a group of 4 (not counting David) and it was very fun! The experience is structured so that it’s equal parts sight-seeing and learning about the mechanics of sailing. I had a ton of questions and David graciously answered all of them while being the perfect host! Highly recommend this experience! We’ll definitely go out with David again when we’re back in town.

This was a great experience! David was very knowledgeable and answered any questions you have. You get to steer and help with the sales if you want or just relax and enjoy the view. Bring a jacket as it will be chilly with the wind, but so much fun.
