What you'll do

You will be doing your bit to help combat climate change by heading off the beaten track to plant vital sphagnum moss on the majestic moors of the Peak District National Park.

On an exclusive guided walk, you’ll learn more about how moors, or ‘peatlands’ play a very special role in your life and the huge benefits they bring – as you walk or wobble across one!

Enjoy stunning scenery and keep your eyes peeled for unique moorland animals including the mountain hare, and a whole range of beautiful birds.

You will find out why the peatlands of the Peak District were in such a bad condition, and why there was no sphagnum moss left. You will find out how restoration work is helping to reverse their fortunes.

Then, do your own little bit of restoration work, as you plant sphagnum moss to help heal the landscape and ensure its future for generations to come.

In the UK, peatlands store more carbon than any other habitat, so it’s really important that we look after them. Sphagnum moss plays a vital role in storing carbon and we need to plant lots of it, and you can help!

I’ve worked in the Peak District at Moors for the Future Partnership for the last 5 years. During this time I’ve helped to monitor the conditions of our upland peat landscape, as well as communicated about the many benefits which peatlands provide to us. I’m a keen naturalist who has studied environmental conservation, and will be able to help you spot some of the animals and plants which inhabit this fascinating and unusual habitat.

Where you'll be

We will visit an area called Black Hill. We will walk through time as you see the transformation into a green and pleasant land that Black Hill has become. We will step onto the infamous Pennine Way, but the majority of the experience will take place on a route less travelled.

Black Hill lies within the Peak District National Park which is a stunning and iconic landscape.
