What you'll do

I immerse you in the history of the building - from it's origins during the Hokitika gold rush to the rebuild as a living war memorial. You'll hear stories of the vicar that was tasked with ensuring the build happened as well as the architect, who was one of New Zealand's first NZ born and NZ trained architects. You'll hear the histories of the servicemen and women who gave their lives during World War 1 and 2. View the native birds and plants carved into the pulpit by world renowned carver Frederick Gurnsey. You'll have access to areas not usually open to the public and be able to climb the bell tower and ring the church bell dedicated to Arthur Davies who lost his life in a quarry explosion. I'll show you the workings of the organ and you'll be able to play the 3 keyboards - including the pedal board. You'll learn the story of Louisa Ann Evans and the symbolism in the stained glass window erected in her memory. Learn about the hidden internal water tank used for the plumbing system. Your financial contribution will go towards the restoration of the building which is in desperate need of a new roof and electrical upgrade. Family friendly treasure hunt tour available on request.

Learn more about Anna

Anna

I have lived in Hokitika for nearly 3 decades with connections to the All Saints War Memorial church for the past 2 decades. I have extensively researched local history, both as part of this project, but also to understand my patients in my work as the local family doctor. This places me in a unique position to guide people through the history of the building and its links to local, national and international history. The project is a team effort towards fundraising for the restoration of this marvellous building.

About the organisation

Anglican Diocese of Christchurch - Hokitika Parish

All Saints is the largest living war memorial on the West Coast of New Zealand. It holds in trust the stories of over 145 men and women regardless of faith who served our country and died in World War 1. It also holds over 400 stories of other community residents. The principal role is ensuring the emotional, spiritual and social resilience of the community by providing services meeting these need

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Anglican Diocese of Christchurch - Hokitika Parish.

Where you'll be

The tour is indoors and therefore not subject to the variable West Coast weather. The histories, memories and embellishments such as the large stained glass window within the building make it a special place within the community. The tour gives you access to experiences and places within the building not open to the general public.
