What you'll do

On arrival guests will be introduced to Brian Garvey owner of Rathe House and his team of dogs, and understand the basics of working with animals in open areas.

Brian will then demonstrate the dogs working a flock of sheep in a small paddock and the art of using voice commands.

Each person will practice working with the dog and moving the sheep into their small pen. Following that, the group will then load into the 4x4 and head out onto the open field with the dogs to the larger herds.

You will also, explore the farm, visit their private lake, and have lunch in Rathe's famous dome mud hut. You will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with their bottle feed lambs.

This was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish! Brian was lively, fun and engaging. He toured me around the property, gave me lunch and coffee/biscuits, and the demonstration of the sheep herding. You will definitely get a bit dirty, but that's the fun! You feel very welcome on his farm and the time flies by. It was an experience I would gladly do again. Thanks Brian for a lovely time!

What a lovely experience! - Brian's property is spectacular. It's huge (500 acres, seriously!), has gorgeous rolling fields, a beautiful 18th century house (he rents out rooms on Airbnb too!), a mud hut, archery range, shooting range, farm equipment, a lake, and more. - Brian himself is welcoming, friendly, and has lots of interesting stories to tell and knowledge to share about being a shepherd. - The dogs are wonderful. Incredibly smart (smarter than some people I know), obedient, loving, affectionate, and friendly. - The sheep seem to be well cared for. They get to spend the day roaming in big grassy fields. There's nearly 300 of them of all ages; we even got to hold a 1-day old lamb! - Seeing Brian work with the dogs and sheep was impressive. A little word here and the dogs would be off at a sprint; a word there and they'd round up the sheep one way; another word, and they'd come back. And the whole way, the dogs are loving it! - Good food: we had tea and biscuits in the morning and salad, shepherd's pie, and fruit for lunch. - Brian even let us shoot some clay pigeons in his firing range as a fun way to cap off the day. Highly recommended!
