What you'll do

First we will cover a brief history of improvisation and introduce improv basics. Then participants will learn the most basic foundational skills needed to create strong improvised scenes. Some of these skills include building ensemble, giving and taking focus, object work, character work and, one of the most crucial fundamentals of improv, the concept of “yes, and.”

Participants will learn these skills through play and various short form games where we will engage you in a variety of exercises that stimulate the creative side of the brain and silence the negative thoughts that can make us freeze in performance (or in life, for that matter). These games involve high energy cooperation, heightened imagination and are a ton of fun to play!

We will then incorporate group work, time for processing and reflection and offer one free alcoholic or non alcoholic beverage.
After the workshop participants will be free to explore the bustling local neighborhood.

*Please note that your workshop fee goes directly to charity (Humor for Hope) and provides 1 session of humor therapy for a hospitalized child suffering from trauma, displacement, chronic or terminal illness.

I am the Founder of Humor for Hope, a non profit that uses trauma informed comedy as a form of therapy for populations suffering from trauma, acute, chronic and terminal illness. I have a degree in Comedy Studies and Sitcom Writing. I received my improv training from the Second City, iO and the Annoyance Theater.

I have led workshops in Africa, along the Syrian border in Southeast Turkey, for medical schools, trauma surgeons, major corporations and in schools and refugee camps.

I have given talks on the power of trauma informed improv at Yale, Genentech and The University of Chicago.

About the organisation: Humor for Hope

Our mission is to provide populations suffering from trauma, acute, chronic, or terminal illness an opportunity to experience improvisational comedy as a therapeutic intervention. Humor for Hope partners with families, caregivers, and medical staff to utilize improvisation and humor as a form of healing therapy in children's hospitals, schools, and refugee camps.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Humor for Hope.

Where you'll be

Our improv workshop will be held at iO (Improv Olympic) near one of Chicago's creative epicenters that lies just outside downtown Chicago by North Avenue. iO is near many neighborhoods that are famous for live music and nightlife, chef-driven restaurants and countless art galleries. If you have an acute knowledge of craft cocktails or an affinity for coffee, plus want to sift through records or thrifted threads, there's no better area.

This was an amazing workshop. I got to learn the basics of improv (SO FUN), performing group games, all while laughing my head off. I felt so safe, thanks to the instructor, so I wasn’t afraid to be myself or try something new or silly! After the workshop we were given a short blurb on the non-profit this workshop would be benefitting and I wish I could go back 1,000 more times to continue to give. What they are doing is amazing work. Please go!

This was such a fun experience to have with a group of friends! I really felt that our instructor Katherine knew what she was talking about and had plenty of experience to walk us through games that had us all laughing our butts off for a majority of the experience. I learned more than I expected about improv and would definitely do this again! It was a very aesthetically pleasing location and the beer/wine break mid-session was a really nice touch. We had the opportunity to hear a bit more about the charity, Humor for Hope, from the Director of Community Engagement- they are doing some awesome work with people in Chicago and it was really awesome to know that we were supporting such a great organization all while having a great time.

Our teacher was wonderful, she was knowledgeable about improv and we played so many games that had us all dying laughing. And the non profit you benefit by attending this experience is remarkable using improv as a form of therapy in children’s hospitals. Highly, highly recommend, thanks Humor for Hope!
