What you'll do

We will begin at Tanz-Hands Cafe at 9 AM, and you can fill up on delicious baked goods, coffee, and tea before the hike begins.

Once the hike has begun, we will start by passing through riverine habitats with majestic 40+ meter tall Newtonia Trees, where you'll get the opportunity to see Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Sykes Monkeys, and Vervet Monkeys in the same area. From there we will arrive at the Ngare Sero dam, which hosts a variety of water birds such as Egyptian Geese, African Jacana, and if you're lucky, a Grey-Crowned Crane.

We will then make our way through 'Sawaka Farm', which is a former colonial coffee plantation with a myriad of springs, varying topography, and astonishing views over the Maasai Steppe. There are a multitude of farm animals that we will have a chance to interact with such as cows, sheep, goats, and horses.

After climbing through 'Sawaka' we will be coming closer and closer to Mt. Meru and opportunities to see Mt. Kilimanjaro (if there are no clouds)! From here we will pass through 'Sanga Nane Village' where you will see the Agro-forestry farms of the Meru tribe.

From here we will be passing through a cool, quiet forest, which is adjoining to Arusha National Park. This trail will lead us back through 'Kwa Mangusha Village' where we will return to the cafe by taxi. Optional food and beverage can be purchased afterwards at the cafe.

I have ten years worth of experience exploring various African landscapes from the dry depths of the Namib desert to the mystical Simien Mountains and the endless East African savannas.

As an experienced naturalist, I'm also certified as a permaculture designer, game lodge manager, and wilderness first responder. I have founded two companies, which focused on environmental design, teaching, and consulting.

To date I have taught 50+ students, designed and implemented projects on 10 + acres of land and facilitated investment in two smallholder agriculture projects of livestock and apiculture.

All guides and operators that I partner with are professionally certified and have also received personal training from me. This includes access to animal and plant taxonomy databases, with 280+ pages of species research and observations.

Jacob and Baraka were excellent hosts, guiding us through the beautiful landscapes around Usa River. Both were extremely knowledgeable about the area/environment in which we hiked, but also very genuine and friendly, making this an incredibly enjoyable walk around the rainforests of Usa River/Arusha!

Who ever is going to plan a visit in Arusha or somewhere else in nothern Tanzania should come around at Jacobs place to stay for some days. His wife Mwajuma and he himself are a dreamteam to give you a really good time. Baraka, a very friendly warrior of the massai tribe is also very obliging. He's showing you around the nearby amazing forrest, is open for talk "home" and would be happy to come along with you to the local market. I could continue rhapsodizing (about the amazing food e.g.) like this for hours, but the best way to experience that, is to just visit him and try it by your own.

We had a great walk through forests seeing monkeys and birds. The meal at the end was lovely and Baraka made a very good guide.
